The worst thing about it is that at his age, the USCIS process might outlive him. He would be better to go to Canada and live with her there - at least they would be allowed to live together while the paperwork is being processed.

Too bad she sold her home already. :(

I smirked at.....

Buttery will also have to go through an interview, so U.S. officials can determine the marriage is legitimate and not just an attempt to bypass immigration rules.

Because I'm sure that skirting immigration was their main intent.

Yes, it would be nice if they could be put in the fast lane because of their age.

This story may put a bit of a spotlight on the issues faced by many. I have heard a few stories where people just assumed that they can easily come to the US after getting married or engaged. They quickly find out that its not as easy as expected and thats why this forum is such great find

I am just curious what immigration benefits they think a 76 year old Canadian woman might hope to get from moving to the US after living and working in Canada all of her life? The only motivation that makes any sense is companionship and love of a spouse/partner. Financially she would be worse off living in the States than in Canada unless her husband is really wealthy and has lots of benefits that extend to a spouse. Unless her husband is out to break the Guiness World record for longevity it is not likely they will reach a 10th anniversary - or possibly even a 5th. Now they will have to spend possibly one year of that apart. Yep - she is really out to reap those green card benefits!

Sad story!!

But on the other hand, should older people get preferred service?? How would you feel knowing older people are getting expedited, thus increasing ur wait time?? Just something to ponder!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Really, really sad. I hope a religious worker visa can be granted so she can spend some time with her husband. It's beyond ridiculous. :ranting:

In their case I wouldn't mind at all. Can't see how the odd preferred expedite would impact my case with any measurable difference.

Hopefully, they can find a way to be together while waiting for their case to be processed.

Maybe not one case. But what if they made a rule everyone over the age of 60 got expedited service? The avg life expectancy is around 75. How would people feel then? Personally I think all WWI and WWII vets should get everything free, lol. Not saying this fellow is a vet (but a good chance he is) Just something to ponder. Hope they work something out

I think that customs guy was an ### - seriously - they sound so completely harmless. I dunno, I suppose the elderly can also apply for food stamps/welfare but still...

Actually, my friend emailed this to me this morning and said "They should've talked to you first" haha since I'm always telling people about the ways to immigrate to the US. Haha

What if? Okay. I'll bite.

IF they made a rule where everyone over the age of 60 received expedited service (which won't happen) I doubt that would measurably impact other cases. My reasoning is that there are not enough people who would be wanting - or willing - to immigrate to the US at that age. There are far more military personnel using expedite and I know they're not measurably impacting visa issuance. Most people at that age wouldn't be meeting each other online, nor would they want to leave their families and their homes and their pensions. Nor go through all this #######.

I didn't get that at all. I felt he was doing his job and was being very kind about it.

^^ You're right he was just doing his job, but I guess I have a soft spot for old people  I don't about these 2 but I just pictured them old and naive and not immigration saavy or tech savvy. When I worked in customer service we were always telling people to download forms online and such and whenever I got an elderly person my heart would just warm up when they said they didn't have a computer and had a rotary phone. I just feel like all this red tape isn't what they're used to. Although there are lots of elderly who are tech savvy and such, but ya know what i mean.
