Depends on a lot of things, but generally about 4-6 weeks (or that was my case).

You should wait about 2 weeks after you arrive in the states before applying so that you are in the SAV system. Once you apply, it usually takes about 1-2 weeks to receive the card.

That was the timeline here in Arizona. Hope that helps!

5 months in our case. Long story.

Good luck to you!

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

approx. how long does it take to get a social security number and card?

If you follow the very basic timeline - Arrive in US, wait about 8 working days (2 weeks) to 'show up' in the system, go down to your local SSA office and apply, you could/should get your card in about 2-4 weeks. With no complications - that's about it. (Don't wait until your I-94 is about to expire to do this, you must have at least 15 days remaining on it, but I'd suggest not waiting that long.) Some folks want to wait and get married first, then get the card in their new/married name - we didn't and it made life much simpler.

There is no set time for everyone. It all depends on how long it takes SSA to verify your status. If you are lucky and it can be done while you are in the office, you should have your card within a couple weeks, but can go back to the office within a day or two to obtain the number if you don't feel like waiting for the card to arrive. If your aren't lucky it might be weeks or months before you are assigned an SSN.
