Hi,

I've heard all sorts of things from various people but wondered if anyone here had any 1st hand experience either because they've had tax back or they're an accountant!

When I send in my p85 and p45 how much tax can I expect back? Is it just the overpayment OR (as I've heard from someone else) the full amount of tax I paid in the last tax year? The latter seems strange to me but wondered if that is indeed the case.

Any uk tax experts - I'd greatly appreciate some help.

Thanks

The tax year starts in April, and last year I worked in the UK from April 05 to July 05, a total of 4 months. I moved to the US shortly after that and got a refund from the Inland Revenue of 800 quid. So, for me, that was about four months tax payments.

I am no expert but i called the inland revenue yesterday and they told me that you can claim your tax back from the beginning of the financial year...so that has to be good, they also said that you need to send in your p45 and the claim could take a couple of months for them to complete...on the plus side you can have the money put into somebody elses bank account to save you waiting around for it.

I got 2856.00 GBP back.... I left UK in Feb 2005 and claimed any money due from the Tax year April 2004 - Feb 2005...

I gave them my US bank details and they paid it into there... no problems...... it took about 6 weeks from when I mailed the form to getting the money... in fact I had the money before I had the letter....

Hi All,

I read this and it concerns me...

Mr. Bruce got back roughly 3700 quid from last year. His mum and him share a bank account back in SCT. She cashed the cheque and wired it into our U.S. joint account this September.

My question is:

Will this count as US income and will we have to report it as such????

I am under the impression that we do not, as it is under 10K...but I could be wrong, as I am no accountant...

Any takers on my query???

Just an 'add on' note here that you can actually claim back your tax up to 6 years after - so for any that missed out on claiming any tax due, and think its too late, its not!!

This sounds like very good news... just to check, do you have to wait until the end of the tax year you leave the UK during? I mean, I'll most likely be leaving in April/May next year so won't have worked for long, but on the other hand (something I'd totally forgotten) would get all my tax back anyway as I would be below the tax threshold (or whatever you call it...). Will I have to wait until the end of the next tax year to claim it, or does the Inland Revenue take the fact that you've left the UK as evidence enough that you won't be earning any more UK income anytime soon?

2005 - We met

2006 - Filed I-129F

2007 - K-1 issued, moved to US, completed AOS (a busy year, immigration-wise)

2009 - Conditions lifted

2010 - Will be naturalising. Buh-bye, USCIS! smile.png
