Hi guys and gals,

Does anyone know if US citizens (passport holders) are supposed to report to the US embassy (in the country they are visiting) about their arrival? Also, is this required if they are planning to stay there for a longer period of time like 11 months or more? Your useful feedbacks and assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

I don't believe it's required, but it's definitely a good idea to let the Embassy know you're there just in case of emergencies. If you plan on staying over the time allotted by your visa, then you must apply for an extension. When I registered at the American Embassy in Brazil, one thing they asked for was my email address and while I was there, I received informational emails that pertained to our saftely such as Malaria and Yellow Fever outbreaks as well as violence that had erupted in certain cities. So yes, I would suggest that you register with the Embassy.

Thanks for the reply Carol. My dad has went to Pakistan and he would need to stay there for a while due to some property matters that he has to take care of. I just want to make sure that he doesn't need to report to the embassy due to his prolonged stay and he won't face any problem while returning to US.

There is no requirement to register, but as the other poster said, it is not a bad idea. It is not difficult, I have done it here in India via email.

Makes it easier to be found if needed. EIther trouble wher eyou are or emergency at home

we didnt report to the embassy where we were when we lived in pakistan.........but pakistan was not like it is now so its a good idea to tell them where he is i think
