So on the DS230 part 2 I checked off that I would like to be issued a SSN when I arrive in the States.

I've heard sometimes this works, sometimes not.

I cannot get onto Nick's benefits until I have my SSN card so...

I read that after two weeks after entry (giving it a chance for you to be put into the system) you can go and apply for a SSN.

Should I do this even if I haven't received my SSN card that I asked for on the DS230 part 2 in the mail after 2 weeks of being there?

Would I be issued two SSN's???

I need a SSN as quick as possible.

Any clarification on this would be great....

I did the same thing but after two weeks and not receiving an SSN from them, I just went in and applied. I was in the SAV system so there were no problems.

They put my application through right away and I had my card in about 1 week.

Its been two months now and I still only have the one SSN, not two.

Hope that helps!

when you click yes to be issued a ssn , on the DS 230 its more for people who aplu for spousal visas like cr1 or DCF , but the check mark also helps and gives the DHS permission to forward your personal info to SS administration so they have the info in theyr save system about 2 weeks after k1 entry ,

you can aply about 2 weeks after you enter

( depands on the state you live some as in my case like to give a run around if you aply after marriage ,

they say they have to request status from dhs ,

since they got you with maiden name in theyr system and after marriage your name changes ,

my case took alomost 6 weeks to get my card , i would advise to file with maiden name before marriage , but like i said it depands on the state some states you have no problems getting SSN with married name good luck and congrats on the visa :)

You bring part two with you to the interview and sign it in front of the officer.

I applied using my married name and they had no problems because i provided my passport with my maiden name that they could look me up in the system with, and then my marriage license so they could change my name. The process took only about 10 minutes and I had my card in a week or so...

I'm thinking that this process is very state dependent too, like everything else here!!! :)

(mine was in AZ)

Enumeration At Entry (EAE) is only for people age 18 or older that have been issued an immigrate visa and ALL K visas are non immigrate.

With K-1 status you will need to file an application at an SSA office and don't say anything about the DS-230 or you might wind up having them make you wait three weeks to apply.

Depending where you live in canada you can also extend your provincial benifits for up to 3 months and pay for them in advance. I live in Alberta and I can use my Alberta Health Care for 3 months into the usa.
