Note the dude that killed the turtle immediately went for the beheading. Other than alternative methods such as gunshot. Hmmmmm

Apr. 4 - Palestinian fishermen catch and kill a giant sea turtle, thought to be a Leatherback, an endangered species.

The rare giant sea turtle caught on a beach near Gaza City was slaughtered and eaten by Palestinian fishermen who said its blood was an aphrodisiac, among other therapeutic qualities. A Reuters cameraman said the fishermen collected the giant turtle's blood and gave it to children suffering from trauma and adults with back problems.

the majority of animals ate around the world are slaughtered by having their carotid artery severed in the same manner, so i don't get what i'm supposed to be hmmm-ing about. i guess if i'm supposed to be inferring some ulterior motive to it, then i'm forced to apply it to videos of canadians clubbing baby seals or skinning them alive then, or the squalid state of factory farm feedlots and downer cows being prodded and dragged by forklifts here at home. i find myself unable to do so because of the sheer stupidity of the notion.

This happens all over the world... try putting a camera-man on a Japanese fishing boat and the illegal poaching would amaze you.

As the video implies... To the impovrished Palestinians, the turtle is way too valuable to release and they did try to help children (even if it is a plecebo effect).

It is quite possible that they don't even know that this species is endangered. I can't imagine Palestineans spending their time as marine biologist and on National Geographic websites with the situation and other concerns happening.

Exactly.

For the OP -- yes, the NERVE of those hungry, besieged people -- using what they can for food, and trying to help their children as best they know how. SAVAGES. Why can't they just DIE or DISAPPEAR quietly, like they're supposed to.

 Isn't turtle one of the haram meats?

yeah, it is. this is about sea turtles in alexandria, but probably still applicable here.

The main groups admitting consumption of turtle meat are fishermen and uneducated people. The data emphasises that this group is largely unaware of the endangered status of the sea turtles, the relationship between sea turtles and their preferred diets (including jellyfish, which are an increasing problem in Egypt), and the religious position concerning drinking turtle blood. Comparatively more educated people show little interest in turtle meat and have better knowledge of the law, and the protected status of sea turtles. The fishermen believe that it is important to save the sea turtles from extinction because they are a source of income to some of them. Educated people believe it is important to protect sea turtles and all other species as each one of them has its own important place in the food chain. The discussion groups indicated that with increasing educational standards, sea turtle blood consumption is slowly decreasing.

looks like you only want to show Palestinains as bloody people !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:angry::angry::angry:

Only Hamas and the people that support them. All other Palestinians are cool.

Don't be so angry. Try some endangered turtle blood to calm the nerves.

P.S. Why doesn't Egypt open the borders to Gaza?...... hmmmmm?

Because they've seen what "Palestinians" did to other countries which welcomed them (Jordan--where one king was murdered in 1951, and another almost overthrown in 1970; and Lebanon--where they ran a "parallel administration" to which the rest of the Lebanese had to pay tax when demanded).

Why doesn't Egypt open the borders to Gaza?...... hmmmmm?

Because it can't. This has been extensively covered in news media from the region -- if you read Israeli newspapers, you would already know the answer.

But basically there are two major reasons:

#1 - Israel is adamantly opposed to the idea of Egypt opening the Gaza border without "supervision" from non-Arabs -- and of course also absolutely opposes allowing Hamas to be part of any arrangement.

Israel controlled the Rafah crossing for decades until its "disengagement" of 2005. That year, Israel agreed to hand over control of the Gaza side to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' forces (Fatah,) but *only* if under the supervision of EU observers, and *only* if Israel could continue monitoring the border electronically via the elaborate system of security cameras that it installed at the crossing.

Hamas was invited by George W. Bush to take part in the elections of 2006. But after Hamas had the temerity to get elected, the U.S. placed heavy pressure on the EU to pull its observers out. Next, the U.S. and Israel tried to back the election's losers -- Fatah -- in an attempted coup against the winners -- Hamas. Well, the scheme failed miserably in Gaza -- Hamas sent the Fatah militias packing, and still retains power there.

Since Israel has been unable to drive out the elected government in Gaza and replace it with U.S./Israel's hand-picked cronies, Israel has simply placed all of Gaza under siege, and refused to allow the borders to re-open.

#2 - Egypt gets $2 billion dollars a year from the U.S., essentially to bribe it into complying with U.S./Israeli demands. Mubarak can only dare to go so far against those wishes, or risk the loss of his paychecks.

Back in January, when Hamas blew holes in the fence and thousands of desperate Gazans rushed across to buy food and supplies, the Egyptians were sympathetic to their plight and allowed them to do so. Israel got extremely upset about it -- the Israeli government was of the opinion that the Egyptian army should start shooting Palestinians (which of course would not be received too enthusiastically by the Egyptian people.) But after a few days, the border was re-sealed -- by Hamas *and* Egyptian troops.

So.... there's really not much that Egypt can do to open the border on its own without risking major hostilities with Israel *and* the U.S. (which would likely cost the Egyptian government its billions in U.S. aid.)

Still, Egypt has made recent efforts to try to negotiate some kind of arrangement with Hamas *and* Fatah to work together to get the border open again.

Is the turtle meat halal?

No, it's not considered "halal." However, if people have no other foods available, Islamic law allows them to eat anything in order to sustain life.

Also, you have to understand that there are many people (of all religions) who do not understand every single nuance of their faith. And there are also some who make deliberate choices not to follow every single tenet of their religion -- the world is full of them.

There are certainly Muslims who do eat things like turtle -- I've seen it some of the villages in the West Bank. And there are Jews who enjoy a slice of ham. And there are Christians who lie, steal or covet their neighbor's wife -- not to mention all those who don't seem to think "Judge not lest ye be judged" applies to them.

So this thread isn't just about some dead turtle, is it?

Good observation.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
