Hey

Well today I finally finally got my SSN# after being in the States for over 7 months.

Now it says on my card "Valid for work only with DHS Authorization".

I only have my EAD card, got married in December (on a K1 Visa) and have my Greencard interview in a few days.

Why does it say this on the card? Will I have to go in and change it when I get my GC??

Just a little confused is all,I heard of the K1 people having this written on their card..

You can have the "Valid for work only with DHS Authorization" removed once you have been approved for AOS and you have received your Greencard.... anyone who does not have a Greencard but is authorized for work has this on their SSN card....

I got my SSN with the same legend. And yes you can change your SSN for another without the lengend when you get your GC. You would keep the old SSN with that legend, but I have read that some employers don't know why you have the restriction. Maybe you will want to avoid things like that in the future.

Before it happens, DO NOT DO NOT let them take your old SSN card until you get the new one. That nice man might not be around the next time. LOL

2. Card Returned With Request For Replacement Card or New SSN

If the applicant has a card and requests a replacement card (duplicate or corrected) or a new SSN:

-- Ask the applicant to return the old SSN card. (If the applicant does not have the card with him or her, remind the

applicant to return the old card to SSA for destruction or to keep the old card in a secure place [not in a wallet or

purse]).

NOTE: Do not forcefully confiscate the SSN card if the applicant refuses to relinquish it. Similarly, return the old SSN card if the applicant requests that it be given back.

You mean applying for an unrestricted SSN when you become a permanent resident?

I guess this would work as a visual aid for the retarded. LOL
