So Chris wants to go New York on the first week of July, while visiting Edmonton.

So I quickly searched for tickets from Edmonton. Fairly reasonable $555 on Air Canada. The flight routes through Montreal. One way on July first from Edm-Mtl-NY is $200.

So that makes me think . . . . hmmmmm. . . . . maybe the flight to Montreal won't be so expensive for when I have my interview.

For the exact same date range, a flight to Montreal costs $877. So the one-way flight from Edm-Mtl costs $367 without the connection to NY. Its the exact same flight # as the $200 NY flight. make any sense? :bonk:

Seems like its just cheaper to book a flight to NY, and just get off the plane in MTL for my interview.

Oh Air Canada, I cannot wait to never have to give you business again . . . .

That's seriously messed up! My only theory is that there is much more demand for just Edmonton-Montreal and not a lot of demand for Edmonton - NYC.

I flew WestJet from Hamilton (when they were still in Hamilton) to Montreal for my interview - it was a fraction of the cost of Air Canada even if I did have to drive a few hours to the airport. It was also a 'fun' flight - WestJet is definitely a different airline! See if you can manage a WestJet flight. Air Canada's rates have always been on the (very) high side.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

at 1 time Air Canada did have the govt contract!! But now I dont believe thats the case! I know Ihave flown on west jet when iwas still in the Cdn Armed forces. The clerks booked one on the cheapest flight!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Flying within the same country (and sometimes all over North America) has always been more expensive than flying internationally. The big US carriers do it too. Heck, I remember trying to book a flight Toronto to Charlotte one time and it was unbelivably $1200 and just for kicks n giggles I looked to see how much it would cost at the same time to fly to London. It was less than half the price.

If you're flying inside Canada, stick with the discount carriers like WestJet. Or the train.

I actually agree with you, I personally like Air Canada. I fly frequently between Toronto and NYC and the service on Air Canada is hands down the best. All of my flights are sold out and we have still left resonably on time and were kept updated at all times. The flight attendants are very very nice. I also like American Airlines, but the quality is just not the same. If we left late, we were not kept updated, the places are much older/dirtier and the flight attendants are just okay.

Air Canada actually has seat sales all the time and I have never paid over $290 for a flight to NYC, which is amazing. You just have to do your research. American Airlines has been around $310 for the same weekends now for awhile. I've been dating my bf for almost 5 years now and when I first started flying years ago the cheap flights were $275, so they've only raised their prices to $15. You can't beat that.

I also really respect them as an employer. They don't underpay their flight attendants like most airlines do. All the flight attendants I know who started working for a NON Air Canada airlines make under 30,000/year, which is atrocious!! Air Canada pays over that to start.
