Interview - Original documents needed

Hi all,

This may seem like a silly question...

I know that we are supposed to bring our original documents with us, but I am uncomfortable carrying around one of THE MOST IMPORTANT PAPERS OF MY LIFE with me on a plane for my fiance's interview in Peru!!!

I do need to bring it, don't I?? That's what I used instead of a birth certificate because I was adopted overseas, brought to the States when I was two and had my name changed. My birth certificate is in German with my original name, therefore it was not worth dealing with it.

The copy was included in the I-129F, so I'm thinking that I do need to bring it. Am I right in this??

God, the thought of carrying this with me (in my backpack, obviously; it will NOT leave my immediate body) is absolutely terrifying. It can take up to a year to receive a replacement one if it were to be (god forbid) lost.

You will need to provide original documents at the interview. If you don't want them to keep the originals, make sure you take photocopies of all the original documents. They will look at the originals, and keep the copies for your file and give the originals back to you.

That was my fear. Oh my. Super yuck! I'll bring it, but man, my backpack is going to be HEAVY from the weight of my naturalization paper!

My dad has a naturalization paper. I took it to get a color photo copy and it looked better than the original because the original had creases in the paper and the color copy was on a fresh sheet of paper. It looked really nice!

Aren't you the petitioner? In most cases the petitioner doesn't even go to the interview. You should not need to take nay of your originals just the beneficiary needs to carry his/her originals to the interview. If you are going there to support him/her in the interview - just your passport should be enough. Good Luck

Yep, I'm the petitioner... It's highly recommended that we go (Peru fiancees/fiances), so I'm going, just to make things easier.

All original documents need to be available at the interview though... ? Things that were photocopied for the I-129F.

Shannon, I am 99.9% sure that you don't need (and should NOT) take your certificae of naturalization with you. Motu is right. Only the beneficiary needs to bring all originals of their documents. You will be traveling with your passport, and that will be enough (It alone was enough to prove your citizenship at USCIS level). Like Motu said, it is common that the petitioners aren't even at the interview, so, they don't have to show any documents proving their citizenship. You have already proven your citizenship at the USCIS level, otherwise you wouldn't have gotten your petition down that far (all the way to Lima )

I know the instructions say to bring or send originals of what you sent in the I-129F, but they should really modify them to explain and emphasize that this is more in regards to the documents you sent to prove your relationship, or that you met; not to prove that you are a citizen.

I am a naturalized citizen too, and there's no way I will be getting on the plane to Peru with my certificate of naturalization

Wow. Thank you SOO much for these thoughts. You are right, I have already proved my American citizenship and I will have my passport (which I wouldn't have if I wasn't a citizen, ha ha!).

I'm not going to bring my naturalization paper. The thought of carrying it with me is too much. Absolutely terrifying even!

Like Nosotros said, I didn't send my certificate of Naturalization to my fiancee or passport - I didn't even go to the interview - In my view your fiancee should bring 'her' part of all original documents like her birth certificate, her divorce decree, her police report etc. etc. - not the petitioners. You are good to go! Good Luck

That said, Jorge and I were not asked for any of my original documents at his interview in Lima a few weeks ago. But if it were me, I would take it. You're are going all that way- it would be a drag to be delayed for something like that, and safer on your person than it would be in the mail if you ended up having to send it later.

You don't need to bring your naturalization certificate!!!

You have an US passport, this is proof of your citizenship.

No way I would take that!

I will be with my fiance for the interview (hopefully in June) and my naturalization certificate for sure will stay were it is, in the safe deposit box!
