It's not the first time he's been known to contradict himself.

In a debate prior to the 2000 election when asked

"With religious diversity increasing, what are your thoughts on the protection of religious freedom and the separation of church and state? Should religions like Wicca be banned from recognition by the military, as some legislators suggest?" 2

His response was:

"I am committed to the First Amendment principles of religious freedom, tolerance, and diversity. Whether Mormon, Methodist, Jewish, or Muslim, Americans should be able to participate in their constitutional free exercise of religion.

Then completely conradicted that immediately in the next sentance of that statement:

I do not think witchcraft is a religion, and I do not think it is in any way appropriate for the U.S. military to promote it."

In effect stating that religious freedom only applied to religions he chose to accept.

It does appear that by 2002 he had at least in some form realized how contradictory this was and offered the following Yule message. Although I have to admit it might be taken as a bit derogatory.

(2002-12-21) -- U.S. President George Bush, in another display of devotion to diversity, sent out a special Yule message to American Druids, Wiccans and other Pagans.

"Laura and I would like to send out Yule greetings to all our Pagan friends," the President said in a recorded message. "We couldn't find a decent greeting card that expressed what y'all believe, so I'm just recording this message. I hope you have a good time sitting around the fire, thanking the "High Ones," and meditating yourself into oak trees. Go easy on the hard stuff, and be careful with the cauldrons while they're still hot. "

White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said it was the first time a U.S. President had ever sent a Pagan Yule greeting and added: "I'm betting it will be the last."
