Adding wife to my apartment lease?

Hello,

I'm a US citizen and my wife is Mexican. She is living here with me legally (I believe) - she has a B1/B2 and an I-94. She's been living in my apartment the last two months with me since we got married. Our AOS process (applied 3 weeks ago) is going smoothly so far - we got the biometrics appointment letter already.

The leasing agent at my apartment said that my wife needs to be added to our lease if she's living with me. I didn't tell them anything about her citizenship or residency status. They said they will have to run a credit check on her, but since she doesn't have a SSN I'm worried that they could decide to not give us a new lease.

Has anyone had experience with this before? Is my wife considered an illegal alien even with her I-94 status?

Please let me hear your thoughts.

P.S. - I love this website!!!

Just be straight forward with them. You're wife is not an illegal alien. Just tell them that she's not a US citizen. You were recently married and she has applied for, but not yet received her SScard.

At the time I did our rental application my hubby didn't have an SSN. I explained the situation and they processed his paper work after we had moved in and he had received his SSN.

Hi there! I am the non-USC and my husband managed to put me on the lease without problems. I'm still awating to get my SSN and they did not run an extra credit check since my husband has been living in the same property for the last 5 years.

I'm not too sure if you are based in California, but just in case you are this article might be useful:
