lied about what?

that it was 'mission accomplished'

How did he lie when the mission was to go to Iraq and oust Saddam. People always go on and on about it but how the 'mission' was not completed. Imagine I had a mission to plant 500 trees in a park. Yet the park burns down after I plant the trees, my mission is still accomplished. The other thing is I never ever heard the administration say this was going to be a 2 week operation. So why do people make it out to be the case.

The definition of mission is: Military. an operational task, usually assigned by a higher headquarters: a mission to bomb the bridge.

"mission accomplished" was nothing more than a photo opportunity.

I think, having watched the news for the last 5 years and seeing that fighting is still going on there today - with around 150,000 troops on the ground - that any victory pronouncement is anything other than empty rhetoric for political gain.

The administration did say that it would take weeks or a couple of months and cost $50 billion. Now 5 years and $500 billion later, we are still there.

I wonder where that money could have been spent???

What would the soldiers and civilians be doing if they were still alive???

I guess hypothetical questions are a waste of time, but it makes you wonder...

ergo, not mission accomplished

Under the banner "Mission Accomplished" Bush declared that major combat operations are over. To quote Bush:

Major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed.

Given that major combat operations were over on May 1, 2003 and that we had previaled as of that day, just what the ** have we been doing there in the 5+ years since? How many soldiers perished between Mar 19, 2003 and May 1, 2003 (during the major combat period) and how many perished since? How's that look on the Iraqi side? Shouldn't we have been outta there long ago if the President was indeed right to make the claim he made that day? Or could it just be that this was just another piece of evidence of how clueless and inept this bunch really was - and still is?

Mission Accomplished my #######.

I still can't get over how many people misunderstand that entire event.

Bush was not talking about the conflict in Iraq, as a whole, when he stated "mission accomplished" aboard that aircraft carrier. All that "mission accomplished" referred to was that the carrier's crew had completed their mission. Individuals and crews don't remain in war zones indefinitely or on a "until the fighting stops" status. They have a tour of duty and when that ends, so does their fighting. So to that effect, Bush never lied -- the mission had been accomplished.

I realize this isn't the easiest thing to understand, but it's true. Did Bush use the opportunity to his advantage? Of course he did -- he's a politician; they're all scumbags. I know some people wil refuse to believe this because it won't fit into their neat and tidy "I hate George W. Bush" world, since if they did, it wouldn't allow them to react in a "ZOMGWTFBBQ!!!11" kneejerk manner.

Yes he was. He specifically said "Major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed".

If you spin that -- like any good politician could -- he could have easily meant "major combat operations in Iraq have ended for the crew of this carrier; the United States and our allies have prevailed in our efforts thus far." I know he didn't say that outright, but I can virtually guarantee you that's what he meant. We all know Bush isn't the best orator in the world, but contrary to popular opinion, he isn't stupid and neither are the people he surrounds himself with too. None of the above would've made such a gaff when it would have been blatently obvious to the American public that none of it was true.

I'm not spinning anything. I just quote what the President said. The White House was busy spinning this debacle in the way that you try to do. This ain't working, though. They miscalculated and didn't have a clue what going into Iraq would mean. They thought our troops would be greeted with flowers - they made these claims either out of sheer ignorance or to make their deceptive case of going to war stronger. It's bad either way.

If this was meant to be what you make it out to have been - following the administration's spin - then the sign would have looked like this:

I was wondering that - 1408 would have been pretty late for the Crusades...

Depends on what country we're talking about too - but offhand you had the tail end of the Mongol invasions with the war between Tamerlane and the Golden Horde in the late 14th C, and the final collapse of the East Roman Empire at the hands of the Ottoman Empire in 1453.
