UK - dual citizenship question

I'm unsure if this is the right place to ask this question, but, if not, maybe someone here can point me to the more appropriate spot.

I was born in Scotland, and immigrated to Australia with my family when I was very young. When I was 18 or so I finally got around to applying for/being granted Australian citizenship (in 1982). I remember very little about the process. I had never really given any thought to the status of my British citizenship, but, since I am now in the process of applying for US citizenship , I recently started wondering about it. On all my USINS applications I have put my citizenship as Australian, but I am just wondering, am I still a British citizen too? Maybe I'll end up with not dual citizenship but triple citizenship?(if that's the correct term)

As far as I've been able to determine, unless you formally renounce your British Citizenship before an appropriate British Official, you retain your status as a British Citizen in the eyes of the British authorities regardless of what other oaths of citizenship you make.

You will need to declare your British Citizenship.

Err - when? I'm a little confused by your response. If it's on my INC/BCIS applications - considering I've already done all my AOS/Removal of Conditions and have a 10 year greencard - it might be a little late for that......

Some time since I filled the forms in, but am pretty sure that was a question, certainly is for Naturalisation.

Quite what the consequences are, I do not know, would not have thought it was 'material', but it is not my call.

Oh, sorry. I just realized I did not answer your original question, AusCal. Yes, you will still retain your British citizenship. And, when you naturalize, you will have citizenship to all three countries. I am also in the same situation.... British and Canadian citizenship.... intending to naturalize and become a US citizen.

I think they take your US citizenship as the "only" one for the purposes of you living there... but they don't force you to legally renounce your British citizenship, hence having to declare it on British soil under a zenith moon and all that jazz :P

What that reall means practically means is that you always have to enter and leave the US on the American passport. When dealing with the US government you are always American.

A friend of mine was born in the US to German and British parents, so has triple nationality also, which she has now bestowed on her children. It is not a problem. I'm not sure how it works on USCIS paperwork however.

Thanks for all the responses - I checked back on my INS (as it was then) paperwork, I was asked Country of Birth - Scotland, and also as a separate question - citizenship? to which I answered Australian. I think i'm pretty well covered. So, whats the "correct term" for being citizen of three countries - triple citizenship?? I'm almost tempted to appley for a british passport - just because I can LOL

So I knew that when you're a resident of the US with a greencard, you're still a British citizen, but you guys are saying you're still automatically a British citizen no prob. if you apply for US citizenship?

...That's like awesome. I think future hubby will like to hear that.
