While no systematic exploitation was uncovered, several cases of abuse did raise a red flag with the government, said You Ay, secretary of state with the Women's Affairs Ministry.

"Seven women have returned from South Korea because they could not stand what happened to them there," You Ay is said to have revealed.

"The government has temporarily suspended all (paperwork) for Cambodia women to marry foreigners," she said.

I don't know if this will result in a moratorium on the issuing of fiance visas from the U.S. embassy at this point or not. It does not sound good.

The South Korean embassy in Cambodia earlier this week halted issuing residency visas to Cambodian women wishing to marry Korean men.

You Ay said the ban, which was approved last week, would be lifted after the government developed a legal framework to address mixed marriages.

This is really bad news for me....i am quiet worried now.

I read the article and I am still not clear if I will be affected. My fiancee just got her packet 3 yesterday and I am not sure if the Cambodian govenment will issue a police certificate or proccess docs from the medical exam. I really hope this doesn't affect me because i am not seeking a marriage license in cambodia. I am applying for a k1 visa for my fiancee to come to the U.S. and get married with me.

If anybody know more on this please share. Thanks.

This sounds like it is primarily directed at South Korea and especially brokered marriages with South Korean men.

Neither the US Embassy nor the Consulate in Phnom Penh has issued a statement regarding this development. However, the South Korean Embassy has announced that it is suspending marriage visas for Cambodians.

I know... You already knew that.

However, it leads me to the conclusion that you should continue as though nothing has happened. If the American Consulate makes a similar ruling, then you have a real problem.

If you fall into one of the 'red flag' categories (poor and/or uneducated woman, brokered marriage), you will likely need to provide exceptionally good evidence of a bonafide relationship.

You can try contacting the American Consulate in Phnom Penh. I haven't dealt with them and don't know about their level of availability or cooperation. But, it's worth a try.
