Well that's written on the banners during the immigration protests, don't kill da' messenger :innocent:

Oh I'm not saying you're retarded. I'm saying whoever thought it up first is.

I mean, really, the border jumped us? #######. That's soooo dumb!!

It kind of sounds like what Malcom X said "We didin't land on Plymouth Rock,Plymouth Rock landed on us."

That makes perfect sense. Africans were brought to this country in shackles, by force.

But for Mexicans to say it... implies they didn't willingly cross the border. Or worse, that they just lived their lives, didn't move, and one day BAM their homes were in Arizona instead.

what a way to increase equity.

still sensitive about the border change? like who? you think the average person knows when the hell that happened, or that it ever DID happen?! lol

:bonk:

Perhaps Mexicans that actually pay attention in school.

LOL

yea.. that's from history class.. they don't teach anything about the mex-am war in the US?

Yeah, something called Manifest Destiny. Now its just called protecting what we stole fair and square.

agree.. Santanna HAD to sell that part of the country, it wasn't like the Lousiana Purchase.. it was SELL or ELSE.. so.. no much of an option for a country with a destroyed army because of the previous european conflicts

Ahh... Vive La France! Nevertheless, I don't think that its a fair sale with a gun pointed at your head.

How the hell did THAT happen anyway? I've always been intrigued...

don't know either.. I know there was an excuse of expansion, but I've never gotten into it that much... also the monroe doctrine had to do with it, America for the Americans.. but other than that, I don't think there was a conflict that triggered it.. correct me if I'm wrong.. I know there was the invasion of US to the Chapultepec Castle in Mexico city, but i dont know if it was before or after the 'purchase'

Gadsen purchase... after the war. William Walker got his start around that time, of spearheading interventions into Latin American nations-fame.

BTW... sabías that one of the big rumors for the term Gringo came out of that war?

And yes... Monroe Doctrine was philosophically tied to the idea of Manifest Destiny. Funny how the expansionist notion of Manifest Destiny morphed into an all-out delusion of entitlement based on exclusion that we see to this day in many attitudes against those that share the North American continent.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

i'm thinking more along the lines of the government being far away and dictating what they could or couldn't do. the only things missing from the story are tea and a harbor.

The one I learned was that the American soldiers wore green uniforms, and the Mexicans wanted them out of there so they kept yelling "green,go." That's how the word "gringo" was invented.

May 7,2007-USCIS received I-129f
July 24,2007-NOA1 was received
April 21,2008-K-1 visa denied.
June 3,2008-waiver filed at US Consalate in Panama
The interview went well, they told him it will take another 6 months for them to adjudicate the waiver
March 3,2009-US Consulate claims they have no record of our December visit, nor Manuel's interview
March 27,2009-Manuel returned to the consulate for another interrogation(because they forgot about December's interview),and they were really rude !
April 3,2009-US Counsalate asks for more court documents that no longer exist !
June 1,2009-Manuel and I go back to the US consalate AGAIN to give them a letter from the court in Colon along with documents I already gave them last year.I was surprised to see they had two thick files for his case !

June 15,2010-They called Manuel in to take his fingerprints again, still no decision on his case!
June 22,2010-WAIVER APPROVED at 5:00pm
July 19,2010-VISA IN MANUELITO'S HAND at 3:15pm!
July 25,2010-Manuelito arrives at 9:35pm at Logan Intn'l Airport,Boston,MA
August 5,2010-FINALLY MARRIED!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 23,2010-Filed for AOS at the International Institute of RI $1400!

There was even a song representing fresh conscripted Irish immigrants (fresh off the boat) to the US... "Green Goes Over The Hill" that these soldiers would sing into battle.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

When I was little I asked my grandpa where in Mexico his family came from. He said "Yuma." I said, "No, before that," and he said "Yuma." He said they were Mexicans one day and then Americans the next. My husband chose to cross the border to marry me so his experience is very different--definitely an active decision. But I wonder what that must of been like for those families a few generations ago--one day Mexican and the next American. I imagine that they didn't notice much of a difference since they were pretty far from the East. My grandpa said they just kept doing what they were doing.

My grandpa's dad was German-American. I don't think anyone even batted an eye at the "interracial marriage" at the time.

and one move to Seattle later...

6/9/08--10 year green card arrived in the mail. My husband is no longer in immigration limbo and is a realio, trulio permanent resident! It says he's been a resident since 04/17/2008.

Exactly my point!

and about the interracial marriage thing. Well, I've never been given the evil eye and I'm married to a beautiful redhead but who knows if I go up north, here in the south it's all commom.

Luckily, that's been true for us here, too. Nobody cares. I always wondered, though, what it was like in the early 1900s. My grandpa was born in 1922. I know my stepmom's parents had problems in California in the early 1940s and her mom was Portuguese. I heard stories of how they had to live in the "Portuguese part of town." That just seems so crazy now, but it wasn't all that long ago. I'm soooooo happy that times have changes--at least where we live.

I figure, people in WA are pretty relaxed, I have family near Port Angeles and they are really cool.

Yeah, I feel the same thing, even my wife's family who is from NC (some people say this state is kinda racist) is even kinder than my own family back in MX haha. I love them to death, specially my father-in-law he such a sport, great guy.

As for professors that make fun of their kids... are these the same ones that need to consider a different line of work perhaps? :)

Maybe. But when a whole academic department comments on how dumb the kids are today,I just start to wonder...........

why an entire academic department can't teach ?

Chapultepec Castle invasion is celebrated in the 1st line of the US Marine Corps Hymn "from the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli..." that is when the US landed at Veracruz, Mexico and fought their way into Mexico City (the halls of Montezuma). This Wikipedia link Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo gives a fairly objective review of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo of 1848 and the subsequent Gadsden Purchase of 1854. The Mexican American War was a product of the expansionist policies of the Polk administration. Mexico sold its northern territories to the US rather than have the US forcibly annex ALL of Mexico. The rule of law at the time was "MIGHT MAKES RIGHT".

Under BOTH of the 2 treaties with Mexico, the US PAID millions of dollars for the land annexed from Mexico.

Side note: the shores of Tripoli refers to the fledgling US Navy with the brand new Marines kicking fanny on the Barbary Coast Pirates (Libya, Tunisia and Morocco) under the administration of Thomas Jefferson.
