I'm in Vancouver till tomorrow. Since January I've rented a car from Budget. It costs me around $500 a month (they had a special January-end of February). Tack on rental car insurance (not through Budget) it's about $10/day.

I prefer renting a car long term.

Call up the rental companies and ask them what their monthly rate is. Better yet, google all the big rental companies and do their rate calculator online. That's how I found Budget had the 399/month special.

J

Iwas told, do not break any laws and always carry an english translation (done by you is fine) of the DL..

Apparently they cannot stop you for a check if you do not break any rule?

At any rate I prefer to drive a rental car rather than my spouse's car, if I need to get stopped for any ticket! ;-)

i would suggest to just go and get a US license first, then it takes care of all the trouble from it.

We thought about buying a car, leasing a car (my sweet said it wasn't a good idea in LA because the distances are so far), and after all we will probably share his car for the first few months until i get a job :) .

(it was more $$ responsible for the start).

She is not eligible for a US license...she is a visitor...her foreign is perfectly good for driving here.

I know my personal insurance will cover a rental! So check with ur insurance carrier back home, one may have to add it to ur policy!!

I have normally found Budget rentals to be the best bet! One just has to phone around or search the internet

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

The insurance I got is provided by ICBC, the crown insurance company of BC. I was (up till Friday) a resident of BC. I did not have another insured vehicle under my name. The insurance I purchased for my rental vehicle was called "Autoplan Rental Vehicle Insurance" and cost $10/day.

I don't know how helpful that information is for you, charisma1, a Swiss national visiting the USA if I'm not mistaken, but it might be helpful for others who were in my situation.
