Dating greeting cards?

Hi everyone

I took a 2 week sabbatical from putting my package together as my sisters were vising from N.Ireland, and so now its back to working on it! Is it necessary to put dates on greeting cards? I usually date my cards when I send them with the month and year. I am captioning all my copies, ( to explain who the card is to and from and the event for which it is intended for) that I am scanning and printing but is it really necessary to put the date on the caption or card as well?

Did anyone else do this?

I didn't do that, although I tried to include the card and its mailing envelope so that the date was on the PO cancellation. I included cards sent to us for Christmas from family as well as from people who were friends to us individually before our marriage as well as joint friends after our marriage, then also wedding invitations sent to us jointly, thank yous sent to us for condolences we had sent, for flowers we had sent or for visits friends had with us, as well as correspondence from my family members specifically addressing something to my husband and from his family members specifically addressing something to me. I didn't include any originals after all - just photocopies.

Still waiting, though, so don't know how they responded to it:-). Good luck - I am sure what you are doing will be perfectly acceptable.

I scanned the envelopes that came with the cards so they could see the postmark on each one.

i didn't bother sending in the cards.. I just sent in the envelopes that had the address on them and the postmark etc....

I really don't think the cards would prove anything as anybody could write them up... but that is just my opinion..

I didn't send any cards because I don't view them as strong evidence either... Perhaps you'll be better off focusing on sending utility bills/insurance information etc in both names coming to the same address over the course of your marriage.

That's kind of what I was thinking. Sending only the envelopes (copies of) showing both our names and time-stamps.

We are finalizing our application now and were only planning to send copies of the envelopes, not cards/letters themselves. Since the envelopes have our full names and are postmarked, they can show we were living at the same address throughout that time period.

After reading this thread, I'm thinking that it might not be a bad idea to include some of the contents of the envelopes, if the writing is legible and our names are clearly indicated on them. I do think that cards alone, not accompanied by any envelopes, would be fairly weak evidence.

I sent in both envelope and card to show the writing was the same on both, as an added bonus to the date/time stamp, and both names on the envelope.

It's not one of the stronger pieces of evidence one can include, but I still think it's important to include.

Thanks for the answers everyone

The cards are being included as additional evidence. We are of course sending a few copies that span the last 24 months of each utility bill/bank statements/mortgage etc as main evidence, but I feel that additional evidence like cards and ticket stubs are also worth their own weight in evidence, as does our attorney who we used for the initial process of AOS. Alas we don't have the envelopes, so I can't send those.
