Changing Careers

Hello Wonder-Full VJers,

I have been working as a graphic designer most of my life, although I have done many other things.

And I was contemplating going to learn more about animation and CG to do create more interesting thingies.

However, then I stopped to think: aaaaahhhh more time sitting and staring at a computer screen.

Even my thoughts of following through on filmmaking, i.e. editing, etc. is all about sitting and going buggy eyed. Bleh.

What to do...

So, as a person who loves creativity and loves to help others as well, any suggestions on interesting fields to look into?

Or ways of working that I have little or no knowledge of?

I would like to apply to be a muse and/or catalyst.

Where do I look?

Has anyone done or know of someone who has so radically changed what they do for income that improved their fulfillment in life???

(Tall order, I know...)

I read the thread on what people do for work..Now how about those of you who changed careers and why and how you did it.

Feel free to go nuts!

Hee, hee.

:star:

Teaching in some form is what springs to mind immediately. If you can't schmooze, then instructional filmmaking might be an alternative.

my hubby is kind of changing careers.. he has been working in warehouses for the last couple of years, driving forklifts and stuff... he hates this kind of work...

so right now he is in school taking classes to become a air conditioning technician... he says he will enjoy this so much more because he can be more independent... plus it pays more..

If only you knew how much they got paid in Aus. To install a split systems alone costs about $800. Central air costs about $12,000.. Easily make over $85K.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

they get paid a lot here in LA too... he won't be doing the installing though.. he will be the one that repairs the systems.. they get paid more then installers...

I wanted to be an accountant when I was in high school.. I took a few classes in high school and really enjoyed it ... I changed my mind after I found out I would need to go to school for 7 to 8 years...

I went from an electronics guy--flying on the P3C in the Cdn Air force, to a RN Student!! Quite a bit different, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

(My boss's job perhaps?!)Actually, would I would really love to do is write - historical fiction a la James Michener. I have a degree in Pscyhology but was taking a different route..I was a pre-school teacher for 4 years but now that I am in the US and culture and child upbringing are totally different I'm thinking to go back to school and shift into nursing as soon as I would have my EAD/GC on hand.

I guess I changed careers a few times in the broad sense of the phrase but my work was always restricted to dealing with "other people's money" ;) punter at a stock broking firm, account manager at a financial instituion, investment advisor/financial planner at a Mutual Fund, consultant at an accounting firm .... In the US; Tax Consultant and now Financial Systems Analyst with the State Government. Had aspired to be an ERP Consultant for a long time but never got to do the change over. But now what I am doing is I guess, the closest I can get to being an ERP Consultant.

when I was in college I was an intern in this company doing some webdesign for a couple of months, just to gather experience (plus it was mandatory we chose something to work to count as credit for college).

If I knew how things would be nowadays with the internet and business, I would've pursued that and take photoshop, etc classes.
