voluntary work while awaiting AOS

Hi folks,

What is the stance on doing voluntary work while going through the AOS process? The reason why I'm asking is that our local animal shelter is in desperate shape needing volunteers and I have a lot of expertise in that area. also i'm extremely bored that i would be happy to do something while waiting. has anyone ever done voluntary whilst waiting on AOS?

That should not be a problem at all. I belive that the issues may arise if you "volunteer" but get paid later, or you "volunteer" for a job you would normally be paid for. But animal shelters, libraries, food banks are all fine.

Another suggestion -- if in your country you worked in professional position, you could volunteer for a professional association. They are often looking for people for membership drives, newsletters, etc.

I agree. As long as you are not getting paid for what you do it is fine. And voluntary work is always great, I think more people should do it while waitingfor thei EAD, or AOS.

Agreed as well! And it also looks good on a resume when you DO go to get work... as you're showing good moral character

Yup It what I'm planning to do and what I do now. Keeps you busy until your EAD comes through and looks good on your resume

My husband volunteered for the county and for a group that did taxes for the poor while waiting for his EAD. It kept him out of the house, occupied and gave him american based references.

Real voluntary work is fine... you're not allowed to 'volunteer' to do a job that you should be getting paid for, because that's cheating... wanting to work at the animal shelter is admirable

I asked my attorney the same question not long ago and was advised that volunteering is fine, as long as you are not receiving ANY type of monetary compensation for it. I am now volunteering for a cancer support group and it's great!!!

I think kajikit is trying to say that if you volunteer for a job that generally pays money then you're holding up a job that someone else could be making a living from...
