Certified Copy....?

I am a bit confused about the whole thing of certified copies.

Our marriage certificate says on the back of it "I certifiy this document to be a true and correct copy of the orignial. Witness my hand and seal " on XXXX date....and then it has the seal stamp and the signature of the clerk from the court.

What is confusing me is that I am not sure if I photocopy this if it is regarded as a "certified copy"....or if I need to have it recertified showing the same exact thing but in "ink" in addition to the certification it already has.

Someone please shed some light. :help:

Take the document to a notary and they will make a copy and certify that it is an exact copy of the original.

The document you first describe is a "certified copy". The best practice is to submit a photocopy of a certified copy and then have the actual certified copy available for the visa interview, should they want to see it.

When you get a certified copy you have to get it from Jamaica's Registrar department. Here is there website. http://www.rgd.gov.jm/

I order a certified copy of my husband's birth certificate online on there site but i'm not sure how reliable it is now. I ordered its since March 13 and haven't heard a word from them yet and my husband hasn't received anything yet...It cost around 600 Jamaican dollars which was only about $10 for me since i used my debit card to pay for it. I emailed them twice and they haven't responded to not one of them.

It can't be a certified copy from any notary, it should be from the same issuing authority that issued your marriage certificate.

This is what I've been reading in this forum so far since I had the same doubt.

Yes, it has to be a certified copy from the issuing authority. Do know of dunhill from India getting an RFE because they sent notarized copy, so do more search on the issue.

This is not my understanding of how it works.

Thank you! That means I'm set in that department :D

I already have copies of my birth cert. I ordered mine last year from online as well and it takes a while but it'll get to you eventually  I was asking the question regarding my US marriage cert but thanks though!

I am sure I read this all over the board as well.

Me and my husband were married in JA and I used a copy of the written out marriage "receipt" to give to USCIS.....nothing was certified it wasnt even official and I was approved with no RFE. Another VJ Jamaica filer told me to do it this way and its saved so much time. I do have the offical certified embossed copy of my marriage certificate that I will be using for the NVC, but I don't think USCIS cares as much about it. I'd just give them a photocopy of your certificate and use the original at NVC.

I ordered mine online too and it took about 4-5 months. They never responded to any e-mails that I sent them. I even called them one day and someone had to nerve to pick up the phone and was silent on the other end. I sat there listening to the conversations of the workers. They are very unprofessional. You have a long wait for that BC. I hope you don't need it urgently.
