A Protest Over Bus and Train Citizenship Checks

The article was really pointing out that it's the US citizens who may have a problem proving they are who they say they are, not LPR's. What I didn't understand was what do they do if you claim to be a legal citizen but don't have proof, do they arrest you anyway? That's what is wrong with this programme, not that there is something wrong with trying to find illegal aliens, but that there is no way to do so without infringing the civil liberties of those who are legal citizens who don't want to/can't carry around proof of citizenship.

I realise that some of you think this is something that people should want to do, but I don't and agree with Alex that the money spent on such an exercise is pretty much a wasted. I can't see the results in terms of illegal aliens found this way, versus the expense and ill will generated adding up. Focus on the job angle and leave people to move around the country freely.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

what a stinkin NOA from 2005? Oh, or his visa that expired in 2005 as well?

WOW!!!! 2 0 0 5!! ####s sake..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

once again....if one is not doing anything they shouldn't be, they've got nothing to worry or complain about.

riiiight, because this has "failproof" all over it?

/disagree vehemently - especially since many people cannot wrap their heads around the fact that my husband is here legally despite 2+ years without a greencard.

uumm did you forget to mention your husband has paperwork that states that fact?

you have nothing that says his AOS is pending?

Like what? I already told you what we have. I would think you, knowing what immigration can be like - are asking me these questions, I see a lovely bus ride for people like us in the future.

the only thing that i dont like about this law is that once when visiting relatives in lower texas we were on a bus and they came on and started demanding documents showing citizenship i was a little girl at that time and i remember i was scared.......we had nothing but my moms drivers license they questioned us because of the color of our skin.......they didnt bother anyone that was not (hispanic, mexican, or any other person that was lite skinned)....they didnt ask me anything i was busy hiding behind my mom but i do remember that at the end of it she got angry and told them were to put the ...........badge that gave them the right to treat us so rudely i guess that was the right answer cuz they let us go lol..........

I have never been treated or spoken to with anything but anger by a cop! They treat us like dirt around here too, because there's too many of us and they resent us. Even when I walk up to one to ask for directions, I get ####### from them. I let my white friends/colleagues ask instead and they act like they're old friends. Fukcin pisses me off, but that's how cops are. Buncha low income uneducated pigs.

You know, there is nothing we can do about how a cop is looking at different people. My husband is black/filipino and he has been through stuff too. Just recently he had an interview and was asked for his naturalisation papers because the interviewer just assumed he was not a natural born USC based on his color/looks. So I feel everyone who feels harrassed because of his color.

BUT- even if ID checks are mostly random (other then when a cop pulls you over for speeding), it is still the law to carry an ID and I don't know why that is a problem for some people.

I mean, I have to show my ID every time I need to go on base. The guards are starting to recognize you even, but I still have to show it.

It is just one of those things that we can't get around, why fight it?

Yes there is. We can take control of these towns and change the culture!

It's already started in Edison, NJ. The Asians got together and voted in a Korean-American mayor who is now purging the police force and changing the culture from the top down.

There's too many of us. You can't treat us like ####### just because when you were a wee laddie we weren't around.

You would THINK that we are living in a pretty advanced country. Why in the world is there nothing like a federal ID card that, once you swipe or scan it, shows your status?

My MIL is a naturalised USC and I think I remember she said something about a citizencard she has? Something of that nature because she needed her Alien# and was looking for that card or paper or whatever it is.

That explains quite a lot about the state of race relations in many other parts of the country. The myth of equality.

To my own amazement I agree with PH for once, on this point. The laws can be better enforced elsewhere. Such as employment, government services, renting, buying property, opening bank accounts etc..

What "culture" is that? Who is we?

The "culture" that treats us as outsiders even though we've been around for decades. The culture of white ethnics controlling political parties and treating the townships, the police forces and the public schools as extended patronage schemes - jobs for their idiot kids and hoe wives.

"We" is the outsiders.

You need to actually try to integrate for there to be equality.

In Jefferson Parish, near New Orleans, Harry Lee, a Chinese American, was voted in as sherrif continuously for about 25 years or more by a constituency that was overwhelmingly not Asian. Of course, he was as corrupt as anyone anywhere, so I guess he doesn't count. Now we have an Indian American as our governor, voted in by a constituency that is overwhelmingly not Asian. He seems to be far from corrupt. (fingers crossed)

The face of America/Americans is changing.
