Is my wife supposed to carry around with at all times her the Alien Reg Card (now expired since we are I-751'ing) along with the letter extending it by 1 year?

Or just the expired card?

Yes that is a condition of being a resident alien in the United States..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Oops, I meant Greyhound bus.

Anyway, Charles and his ilk may think it's a wonderful example of "enforcing the laws" but I'd rather have my tax dollars go to something other than arresting LPRs who forgot their GC at home. I'd rather see them arresting jaywalkers.

I can understand checking papers near international borders. But on a bus from NYC to Florida? That is just wrong.

All I can say is I am glad we don't live near a border. None of that ####### to worry about.

No, actually my friend just wrote an article about a bunch of people who live in New York and were arrested on the way to Florida. They were arrested by New York officers. Some of the arrested were legal, some weren't.

Where were they arrested? At an airport?

I realize it's important to have all your papers when you travel. I'm just saying I've never heard or seen anything like an immigration checkpoint in the course of my daily activities here in the Middlesex or Somerset county areas (NJ).

On an Amtrak bus leaving from I think Port Authority.

It's not an immigration checkpoint, they just come on the bus whenever, including before it leaves the station. Amtrak allows them to do this.

hmmm, reminds me of an old Nazi war film.."Papers..Papers....your papers are not in order..Guards...take him/her to the other train bound for..................."

In the article you posted people got stopped from NYC to Chicago. This is something they do on all buses and trains all over the country. It's not a border thing. The idea is to catch people going about their daily lives in the United States and arrest the ones who are living here illegally.

The comparison is appropriate. The similarities are eery.

What sort of an idiot would want the laws enforced. The laws are merely a matter of interpretation. Especially federal ones.

I have to agree with CharlesandNessa. I was expected to carry my passport around with me when I lived in European countries and I am expected to have it with me whenever I travel here in China. I don't carry it with me because it is more valuable than money to me, but I understand the consequences if I'm asked for it and can't provide it. The thing is, I know I will be able to get out of trouble because I know my visa is valid.

By elevating the law to untouchability and unquestionability, you are essentially saying you feel anyone who ever wrote a law is smarter than you, and you bow in deference to their better judgment. Laws, you must think, are best left for current politicians to question. Is that how you feel?

I don't think you were addressing this question to me, but I think we can complain about a law all we want, but until the law is changed, no matter how much smarter we think we are than the people who wrote the law, we have to follow it.

For me it is simple: I am supposed to have my greencard on me, that's what I am doing.

That police is checking your papers can happen anywhere, at anytime to anybody, it shouldn't be a big deal. And if you have your papers on you as you are supposed to, you have nothing to worry about, right?

It's not only LPRs, USCs need to carry an ID as well and need to produce it when asked for.

Maybe as a military wife I am more used to always have ID on me, my military ID, dl, now the greencard too reall doesn't make a difference (in my wallet)

the only thing that i dont like about this law is that once when visiting relatives in lower texas we were on a bus and they came on and started demanding documents showing citizenship i was a little girl at that time and i remember i was scared.......we had nothing but my moms drivers license they questioned us because of the color of our skin.......they didnt bother anyone that was not (hispanic, mexican, or any other person that was lite skinned)....they didnt ask me anything i was busy hiding behind my mom but i do remember that at the end of it she got angry and told them were to put the ...........badge that gave them the right to treat us so rudely i guess that was the right answer cuz they let us go lol..........

once again....if one is not doing anything they shouldn't be, they've got nothing to worry or complain about.

riiiight, because this has "failproof" all over it?

/disagree vehemently - especially since many people cannot wrap their heads around the fact that my husband is here legally despite 2+ years without a greencard.
