The Best Cities for Jobs

From Alison Doyle,

Your Guide to Job Searching.

The Milken Institute recently released its annual list of the cities where the most jobs are being created. The top 10 cities are:

  • Fayetteville, Ark.
  • Las Vegas, Nev.
  • Fort Myers, Fla.
  • West Palm Beach, Fla.
  • San Diego, Calif.
  • San Luis Obispo, Calif.
  • Laredo, Texas
  • Brownsville, Texas
  • McAllen, Texas
  • Monmouth, N.J.
Fayetteville, Arkansas, home to Wal-Mart, rose from 23 to earn this year's top spot. Many cities that formerly ranked high on the list dropped quite significantly, including Boston down from 45 to 136 and Santa Cruz from 38 to 144.

Gary, Indiana, was at the bottom of the list, for the second year in a row

Youngstown-Warren, Ohio and Flint, Michigan also in the list's bottom three. Many cities that were formerly well-placed, due to growth of the high-tech job market, have dropped. Boston, for example, dropped from 45 to 136, while Santa Cruz dropped from 38 to 144.

According to the Milken Institute, the cities that ranked high have a diverse economies with a mix of stable industries. If you're considering a move to one of the cities that are creating jobs, where are the best places to look for local jobs? CareerBuilder.com powers the employment classifieds for more than 130 local newspapers, including Gannett, Knight Ridder and Tribune, as well as US Today's career channel.

There are also local and regional job sites that can be effective in finding a job in a specific location. Again, many of these sites include listings from local employers who may not be inclined to post on the major jobs sites. Jobs by State - US job listings, employment classifieds and career resources listed by state. America's Job Bank is another excellent source for finding local jobs. The database is searchable by job category, keyword, state or zip code. Searching by zip code will return results within a fifty mile radius.

Don't forget to consider money. What you're making in your present location, may not be enough to get by on in a higher priced location.

Use online salary calculators to determine how your current salary or salary offer measures up or calculate how much you'll need to earn to get by in a new location. Also use salary surveys to research how much you should (or could) be earning. Visit our Compensation Center to get calculators, surveys, and advice on negotiating compensation with that prospective employer.

Most importantly, conducting a long distance job search isn't always easy. You'll need to be creative, flexible and ready to move on a moment's notice

Monmouth NJ is a county, not a city.

And once BRAC hits Fort Monmouth (in Monmouth county, NJ), it will drop off that list fast.

My last comment: this list is meaningless; lists of best job markets for specific skillsets/trades would be infinitely more useful. I'm not interested in the best job market for cashiers or carpenters or pig farmers or actuarial analysts or aspiring porn starlets. I'm interested in the job market for my specific skillset. I suspect everyone reading this thread is also primarily interested in their own skillsets/trades as well.

Yeah the Fort Monmouth guys are being moved out to Aberdeen (MD). They're constructing a lot there too.

I hear (a lot of people around here have family at Fort Monmouth) that less than 15% of the people being offered relos to Aberdeen plan to take it. Everyone else will be joining the civvie work force soon.....perfect time, just in time for a recession!

But I ain't got no skillz!

I think we should ALL go into the medical field, geez. I think they're pretty much set, it's crazy. I completely forgot about all the aging baby boomers when I was deciding that no I didn't want to be a doctor or a nurse and completely missing the fact that there's hundreds of other positions in medical, I'm so stupid

My sister's husband's mother just moved back here to SC from Washington state a few months ago. Whatever she is...she like...runs some kind of heart machine tester thing or something, I don't know - but she knows how to work this machine in the hospital, didn't go to college or anything, it was all on the job training however many years ago. Anyway, so she was just here visiting a few months ago and went by the hospitals she used to work at to say hi. Both hospitals are desperate for her to move back and re-interview her on the spot. They end up competing with each other til in the end I think she got like...an $85,000 salary plus all movin expenses paid plus big signing bonus out of it

Not. Fair. Dang it

Summer 2001 - met my Scottish boy

December 18th, 2007 - proposal in Madrid's Botanical Gardens with a duck standing behind him going 'food?'

January 18th, 2008 - I-129F sent to VSC

January 31st, 2008 - received NOA1, issued Jan. 24 :)

February 24th, 2008 - NOA2; omgwtfbbqlolz

Certain Government jobs rock, because you get relocation packages and cost of living adjustments (COLA).

This applies in part to "quasi-Government" roles. Can you figure that one out? The $100 question of the day.

I love my job!!!!
