Liberal guilt in its purest form usually involves any or all of the following:

...

4. Buying organic.

I thought buying organic was about eating healthy.

I buy organic. I honestly don't have any kind of white or liberal guilt.

What does "organic" really mean? I see things everywhere that say they are organic but does it mean anymore than tricking us into paying a few cents more for something thinking we are saving the world or eating healthier? I would bet anything that if you were to check out something labeled organic in Wal-Mart it is exactly the same as the product next to it without the "organic" label.

Liberals don't shop at walmart. heck they refuse to allow it in NYC. They shop at Whole Foods..

Another preposterous notion. We've shopped at Walmart AND Whole Foods in NY, NJ and CA. I don't make a distinction - it depends purely on what I need, how much I can get it for and indeed - how much money I have.

In fact, it might be worth pointing out that part of the Democratic base is the poor, specifically the urban poor. The poor tend to shop where stuff costs the least. Obviously.

Organic can be many things - generally though the process to produce the food is more labour intensive and uses significantly less chemicals. Most organic meats are produced ethically as well. That means the animals lead a more natural life and interestingly this dramatically increases the flavour of the meat.

Have you ever seen that movie - Fast Food Nation?

There's a sequence at the end where they show what happens on the "killing floor" at a slaughterhouse. Seeing that, I can quite understand turning vegetarian.

aaHhh. Maybe you can tell me where Walmart is located in NYC..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

What would that have to do with what I wrote?

there's no target or ikea either - might have something to do with the economics of a superstore being more favorable in the suburbs where rents are cheaper.

"Organic" means produced without artificial additives, pesticides, antibiotics, growth hormones

and other nasties.

Look for the "USDA Organic" seal - it tells you that the food was grown, raised, or prepared

according to a specific set of standards and practices. It doesn't guarantee that the food

is 100% organic, but it has to be at least 95% organic to display the seal.

Yup - hence people who want to shop at those places, either drive over to NJ - or upstate.

There is a Target store in NYC and Ikea are building a new store in Brooklyn.

No Walmart though - Boo is right.

The million dollar question is why are there no Walmarts in NYC.

Sure are a hell of a lot of Duane Reade stores on just about every corner..

Sure - just not in NYC. There are quite a few on Long Island.

No idea. Maybe they can't compete with K-Mart in NYC? :P

The answer is that Walmart's CEO Lee Scott has said it doesn't make financial sense.
