I don't know what the blackmarkets are like in other countries, but Lima, Peru has a pretty good one  You can get a copy of Rosetta Stone that retails for $400 or so for about $10 or $15. And yes, it works just fine! I've used Rosetta Stone and this exercise book:

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Practice-...44273341/?itm=1

The combination of the two was a really good start for me. Then, of course, after you study it you have to practice conversing with Spanish speakers.

Diga SI, a la pirateria.

Say YES to pirated copies.

Don't speak spanish :( I was a complete noob in HS and college and took french instead, thought there was a good possibility I'd live in Europe and I might be interested in international business, so it made sense at the time.

Want to learn though. But my experience with languages is that you can learn the basics and it'll kind of sit in your brain waiting to be activated, but really you're not gonna be 'fluent' in another language unless you're forced to use it on an almost daily basis. Like I think I know French pretty well, but I'd have to get thrown into french-speaking situations for a couple weeks before it all started coming back to me.

My daddy still pronounced fajita 'fuh gee tuh' so I'm doing better than him :P

Summer 2001 - met my Scottish boy

December 18th, 2007 - proposal in Madrid's Botanical Gardens with a duck standing behind him going 'food?'

January 18th, 2008 - I-129F sent to VSC

January 31st, 2008 - received NOA1, issued Jan. 24 :)

February 24th, 2008 - NOA2; omgwtfbbqlolz

February 29th, 2008 - NVC letter sent

being a multi-lingual is really an advantage.. it pays well..

If you chose to pursue a career where the use of the multiple languages is a factor, otherwise its a non-issue to your pay. I'm multi lingual, but I use exactly one language at work....english. The fact that I am completely fluent in 3 other languages makes no different in my pay. ;)

-P

I agree with your first sentence..

And , that depends in what job you are into , or what company, or who you working for and in what type of foreign language you can speak.. ;)

there were free podcasts spanish lessons in Itunes...

I can speak a lil bit spanish too.. :) some i learn from my visayan language,, majority I learned it from Costa Rica.

There were free websites to learn spanish too,,,

My fiance told me also that if I am fluent in Spanish, it is an advantage when I will come to US, but for me, as they said above.... it depends on the field of your job... My fiance is working in hotel as chef, so I think he need to speak spanish because plenty chefs are spanish,, :) coz they cook very good.

I speak a little bit Spanish as well. It's a beautiful language.

I wish I could practice it more, but I don't know any people to chat to in Spanish. Except for my Grandma, because she is Spanish. But we always talk German somehow.

I love learning languages - I was thinking of maybe learning Russian, I am sure that would be interesting.

I don't speak it, but I can understand some of it with assistance. I was surprised how much I remembered from Spanish classes in the past while watching that You Tube video Boo-Yah! had posted in his sig. I can't just flip on Telemundo though.

as for me, i was always been a student before i got here in the states (dont ask why lol), so my working experience is so limited to none. here in colorado, spanish is a plus or at least to the jobs im looking for... so at least, if i can speak spanish, it would have been a plus knowing i dont have much working experience...

Or as a friend's ex-gf who is white, no harm intended my baby is white, would say muntwo

Telenovelas are the best way to practice listening comprenhension, hate them though the whole mexican society is flodded by these shows and futbol. They are hipnotized and "idiotized" by the dumb box. They are more worried if Jose Fernando de la Hacienda is cheating on Alondra Luna Paz than on educating their mind.

I am fluent in both Spanish and English since I was born in Colombia but was raised in the States. All my adult life I was told that I was pretty lucky to speak both languages since that would get me ahead and I'd get paid more. Never happened and I thought it was all garbage.

Then I was forced to find a new job before my contract expired on the one I had. The new one I found paid very well and it was for a bilingual applicant, I had no experience at all and the only reason I was hired over all the other people who applied was because I am fluent in both. That's when I realized of the importance of knowing both languages.
