limit on items to bring to us?

I'm looking for a source to show me what the limits are for items brought to the US before he will start owing a tax on them. Specifically he will be bringing cartons of cigarettes with him but he seems to think he can only bring two cartons (per his friend in Canada) and anything over that he'll owe a fee.

Does anyone know where I can get this info?

Two cartons of cigs is correct...anything over and it falls out of the "for personal use" category and you must pay duty on it.

Check these links out, they may help w/ info.

What you bring in above what is allowed, is of course, dependent on "if they select you" to check your baggage. At our airport, usually several international flights land at once....making things a bit crowded, so sometimes they don't make each person open their suitcases as they pass through CPB, but I don't know how it is at the airport your husband will be landing at. (My hubby only got lucky because when he was coming in, there was a rainstorm, and only after it cleared did several flights land at once....so they were somewhat backed up. When he got to the counter, they asked him if he has any 'spices' since someone before him brought a bunch of spices and some were no-no's, to which he answered no, and they waived him on through....did not make him open his suitcases.)

Well I found this http://www.cbp.gov/linkhandler/cgov/toolbo...beforeyougo.pdf

which made my head spin but that's just for residents. He wouldn't be a permanent resident yet so I don't know if it applies to him. For me, I could only bring a total of 200 cigarettes which is 1 carton.

Also I guess it depends on what country it's purchased in, for example if he were sub-sahara then it's all good. lol Who thought up these laws??

I think the restrictions to what you cannot bring, for example, are the same whether you are a citizen or not. Take for example, Cuban Cigars, you can't bring that in, regardless of whenther you're American, or whatever nationality. In general, if you stay away from bringing food items(that's just not allowed period, from what I can see), and 'too much' of other stuff(gift stuff), you should be OK. In any case, I don't think a non-citizen would be allowed to bring in more than what a citizen is allowed. Just my take on it.

It is really best to check with the customs office at the airport where he will be landing. For Ahmed he is flying into Atlanta so I call their information and got the number to their customs office and asked specifically what he needed when he landed here and they had a web site which told the restrictions of what he could bring. I did not save the link or would post it. But it is a good starting point anyway.
