CR-1 and Travel Abroad

My husband is currently residing in US with two year green card (CR-1), expiring end of January 2007. If he wants to travel abroad in January, can he do so?

We would also like to know what forms need to be completed to renew green card. How early do these forms need to be completed?

We greatly appreciate your advice on this matter.
