U-HAUL?

My husband asked the US customs officer if it is okay to bring a used mattress to the US and they said no problem. We had no problems taking two used sets across the border. However, we tried to bring one of the mattresses back into Canada (long story) and the Canada Customs agent's eyes almost popped out of her head when we told her we had a used mattress with us.

Question about moving your personal effects over the border:

A friend of mine is a Canadian Customs officer and told me most likely I won't be able to bring my USED mattress and box spring over the border due to bed bugs. If you had the mattress treated with anti-bed bug stuff, you need to have proof to show them at US Customs. If you're lucky and they decide to check your stuff, they could tell you to turn around and dispose of your mattress in Canada.

Has anyone heard this? Does anyone have a link to the list of items one can and cannot bring across the border when moving?

Thanks!

I didnt think that taking your mattress to the US was a problem..but I remember when I was Immigrating to Canada 6 years ago it was an issue on the Canadian side.. I remember a couple of ladies from my Canadian Immigration group that had to leave their mattresses behind...Dont remember why specifically, and that was 6 years ago..

I remember Misa, said she took hers to the US (via Upack) and there was no issue with it at all..

I brought my futon mattres through with no problems!! Was on my inventory list! Of course they never looked inside my Uhaul!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Maybe they had ripped off the "Do not remove under penalty of law" tags?

Thanks for the replies, guys. Seems to me that the Canadian customs are more stringent on the mattress/futon issue.

Again, if anyone has the link to a list of allowed/contraband items to bring into USA when moving there, please post. Thank you!

I just want to be 100% I can import my mattress and not have to turn around, find a dumpster, and spend an extra night in Canada when I don't need to.

Graciously yours,

J of Team J and B

Since I used a moving company, I couldn't remember if people doing it themselves needed forms or just the list. Thanks flames :)

I remember the moving company having me sign a government form saying I vouch that I have cleaned and de-bugged all my outdoor furniture, bbq and such so that I wasn't transporting any creepy-crawlies. Can't recall which specific creepy-crawlies they were concerned with, but there it is. I wasn't asked for any forms when I crossed the border with a carload of stuff, though.

the form people are thinking of is form 3299, and its for goods not accompanying you, so if its in ur Uhaul, the form is NOT required

Yeah, I had to sign a less intensive version of that form with the moving company.... along with the I-ain't-sendin'-no-creepy-crawlies form.

We'll actually be using UPack and UHaul... Alf doesn't have access to a truck, and the door-to-door option with UPack was about $250 more than terminal-to-terminal. Instead of paying $250, he's paying UHaul about $40 and driving his things over to the terminal.

Like someone else has already said, make sure you both get quotes from UPack if you want to use them. My quote was at least $300 more than Alf's quote.

For those of you who have used UPack, will they have all the nec. paperwork and forms for him to fill out, or should we get them online?

And I completely agree with needing to get everything debugged and signing a no creepy crawlies form. The creepy crawlies should have to wait for a visa just like the rest of us!:devil:

I'm going with a truck too, but not UHaul. My fiance assures me that the UHaul fleet in Canada is poorly maintained. So I'm flying to Indianapolis, picking up a Penske truck, driving to Ontario, then back here to Atlanta. Penske guarantees the truck is there (UHaul will sometimes give away your truck!) and they offer unlimited mileage. UHaul would have cost a lot more since they didn't offer the unlimited mileage.

When we priced it, UPack was around $1800 for that tiny little square of space (good luck if you have any oddly shaped furniture like a modern computer desk). The cheapest moving company was $2100 (for 2500 pounds). My flight to Indianapolis + truck + gas should be under $1100.

I'll give an update on how well it goes after our move at the end of the month.

Not all uhaul trucks are improperly maintained. best to head to the Uhaul you would be using and check out their trucks. of course ti would not be the same trucks that would be their at the time of ur move, but you would get an idea of what kind of trucks that owner maintains!! But their appears to be a lot of U-haul horror stories, but then again, people usually write down the bad stuff
