7. A US Citizen Can Hold Office and Have More Job Opportunities

Only a citizen has the right to hold an elected position in most city, state or federal offices. Many federal, state and city jobs also require citizenship.

great. main reason. I wanna be president! jk :P

Sorry to bust your bubble but to be president you must be natural born.... That is why we will never have President Arnold....

Dam shame as he is one of very few politicians who actually has a brain and genuinely gives a ####.

It IS exciting that he's eligible, but it also reminds me that it was one year ago today that we filed the removal of conditions papers....argh!

ONE YEAR!!! ###### #### ...

Does that mean he has had to stay put for a year and not travel abroad?

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

nope, the notice of action letter that they send to tell you that they have recieved your paperwork, and that it is process, acts as a greencard extension letter for one year.

When he travelled out of the country twice, he just had to show the letter along with his expired greencard. The letter will expire on June 30th though. Hopefully he'll have the new card by then. Otherwise it's down to the immigration office to get a stamp in his passport for our trip in July, and his trip home in August.

Thank you for asking...

Coincidentally, Hubster is eligible to apply for naturalization for the first time TODAY!!! He will, soon enough, but we have a tax bill to pay first and the fee isn't cheap, so we'll get the papers and money together within the next few months. We felt that both being dual citizens would allow us flexibility for when we go to live in the UK. If we need to come back here it will just be easier. Hubs would like to vote someday I think, and there are definitely some positive benefits, but if he had to give up UK citizenship, he wouldn't have contemplated it.

Congratulations!! (And I am SO dying to be able to vote, too.)

No kidding. I find that really annoying too. It just doesn't seem right, somehow.

I still cannot believe the year BS. It's like come on guys. What is the chance that someone from the UK is committing immigration fraud. Unfortunately the US is so caught up with being PC that they disregard reality. I know back in Aus any application from another 1st world nation is usually processed very quickly as the chance of fraud is realistically small.

Sure doesn't. I was actually reading up on this yesterday. You can apply for citizenship, but the LOC does need to be approved first so both apps will be floating in USCIS land somewhere at the same time....

One of my friends had to wait 5 years to clear up her visa to the US from Canada.

First of all I don't know why Canada and the US do not have an open border policy like the EU or Australia has with New Zealand. Where one can basically board a flight and take up residency in the other nation without any visa..

It's not so much that as the fact that our service center is no longer processing those petitions, but are sending them to another service center, but ones from before June of last year seem to be stuck on a shelf somewhere, or in the mailroom to be sent. It's any guess as to where petitions are. People who filed long after us were approved because their files were immediately transferred to the other service center. Yep, USCIS is a clusterf##k! Hmmm, or COULD it be his Welsh last name....those Welsh ARE suspicious.

Oh no. You are caught in that loop hey. He'll probably get citizenship before that gets approved..

Javi is planning on applying for citizenship. He wants to be able to vote. Plus, he won't lose his Mexican citizenship so we can travel back and forth easier once he is a citizen here. The whole not being deported thing is a plus in my mind. You never know when the good old US might decide to send everyone packing. I know it's a long shot but I just wouldn't want to chance it. Especially after all we've been through to get him here. He can apply for citizenship in November of this year. I'm not sure he'll do it the exact day he becomes eligible but he will do it.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

I think anyone who wants to make sure their spouse is entitled to benefits should let them know what will happen if they choose not to become a citizen. I know I want my wife to be entitled to my retiement and social security if I die before she does.

Just think what would happen to your spouse in the event that you were to die? I would want my wife to be taken care of and if she remained an LPR she would not get nearly as much. Also inheritance taxes are much higher if you leave to an LPR than if they are a citizen.

I am absolutley uneducated about my rights and entitlements as a LPR....I always thought this wouldn't matter.
