I remember reading about one guy who had hung his washing on the line... After it had dried, he put his sheets back on the bed and he got bitten in the night be a black widow

After reading that, I check the bed before I get in it Oh and I always shake my shoes too... I HATE spiders so much... Sends shivers up my spine just thinking about it.

I know - I am totally grossed out now!

BW getting into the covers sounds weird - I thought they normally liked dark secluded areas... You just know I'm going to have to check now!!

Why do they need to be so poisonous anyway?! I mean - do they really need enough venom to kill a human!? They couldn't eat us all before we got all mouldy!!!

Seeing spiders

A friend called in yesterday who's just returned from a year living on Pitcairn Island.

It cost her a large part of her life savings to make the move, and sadly it didn't go too well for her. Among the many interesting stories she had to tell, the very worst thing about the place, she said, is the spiders. That's a 'small' one there on the right. Click on it to see it closer to full size -- unless of course you're arachnophobic. Like my friend.

These are the ones that Stephen Spielberg should have used in Arachnophobia, she reckons. They're everywhere, and they're enormous -- and unlike other spiders that run away when you move towards them, these ones move towards you.

I used to see these in Hawaii - cane spiders - scary as hell but luckily they usually don't bite.

I was more scared of the centipedes which used to come into my grandma's basement...

Well although my Pitcairn bride has gone from my life, I'll always have the memories of the big spider luau's on the beach. They'd fatten up a spider for a couple weeks, then kill it, stick an apple in its mouth, and slow roast it over a bonfire for a couple hours. Stunk horrible but tasted like chicken.

We never had to worry about spiders in the bed. We did have to worry about them stealing the covers and kicking us out of bed though. You get used to it.

man, I get about two opportunities a YEAR to tell my 'huge huntsman spider in the car' story, and it looks like I missed my chance here
