Seeing spiders

A friend called in yesterday who's just returned from a year living on Pitcairn Island.

It cost her a large part of her life savings to make the move, and sadly it didn't go too well for her. Among the many interesting stories she had to tell, the very worst thing about the place, she said, is the spiders. That's a 'small' one there on the right. Click on it to see it closer to full size -- unless of course you're arachnophobic. Like my friend.

These are the ones that Stephen Spielberg should have used in Arachnophobia, she reckons. They're everywhere, and they're enormous -- and unlike other spiders that run away when you move towards them, these ones move towards you.

Well when I was in Cabazon during summer 2006 we had this fellow living with us... didn't find out until the last day when I was sweeping behind the desk... I freaked and I'm not even scared of spiders...

Brown recluse... if you do a google image search you can see what they do if they bite you...

They have those in Maryland too... There are only 2 deadly spiders there and that is one of them The other is the black widow

Ohhh I would so totally freak - I am getting all goosebumpy!! I don't care about spiders here but there... well... you don't get deadly spiders in the UK... unless they are in a zoo.

Yuck... I was even fine when I swept that recluse out - I just happily called to Jeremy - "oh look! There's a big spider!" In all my innocence He came running in from the bedroom, took one look at it and told me to get back...

THAT was when I freaked - when I realised that it was poisonous...

Thing is it was living behind the desk where I sat EVERY day, and where Jeremy kicked off his work shoes every day... they like living in dark places...

Same in Cali... never met a black widow... They look... spikier than recluses... thing is the recluse looked just like our big wolf spiders we get here - kinda brown and a bit hairy but relatively harmless...
