Well, I have to kill time until my biometrics date comes... it's too far... 23rd. Since I got NOA1s, I took SSN and driver's license with married name already... what else can I do? :sleepy:

K :luv:

Hi K (or anyone else who can answer this),

We've been trying to change my SSN to my married name but the SSA folks keep telling us different stories. One employee tells us that once INS has been informed then we can tell them (so that I show up on their system) but the next time we went there (yesterday), another employee said we can't change the SSN name until I get my GC.

How did you all change your SSN names? I thought it'd be a pretty straightforward process as the flowchart indicated but it's proving to be confusing here in Missouri.

Can anybody help?

Also, we were advised to put my maiden and married name on our AOS forms, which we did but we wrote a note (a rather huge note) stating that I won't be hypenating but will rather take on my husband's name. But when I got my NOAs, they put in my surname hypenated. Not that I mind since I'm sure they're just following on what was on all our forms. But will this pose any problems along the line?

Thanks! And congratulations to everyone else who have a reason to be excited :)

I still keep my SSN with my maiden name. I decided not to go to the office now , as when GC arrives once again you have to change it ( I think so) in order to remove the note "with work authorization only" . Are there going to be any problems if I have SSN with maiden name?

Hi sunnylight,

Yes, I agree with you, updating CV is definitely "positive" time-killing activity

But, sigh, it's kinda depressing everyone who is on the same truck has earlier appointment date...

I still keep my SSN with my maiden name. I decided not to go to the office now , as when GC arrives once again you have to change it ( I think so) in order to remove the note "with work authorization only" . Are there going to be any problems if I have SSN with maiden name?

Hi patriciaofoz,

You're right, here in US, every employee tells different story. I'm getting used to.... :P

When I went to SSN office after marriage with marriage cert., an employee said SSA could give SSN to K-1 holders but not to "spouses." And he told me he created my SSN with my maiden name and I needed to wait using new name until I got GC or EAD.

But what I found in my mailbox was SSC with married name  So, this is kinda accident. As I read through forum, some could change their name on SS card, but some couldn't. Maybe it depends on employee.

And, as sunnylight wrote above, anyway we have to remove "with work authorization only" by GC/EAD later, no need to change surname right now. Usually we don't use SSC as ID, SSN itself is the important thing, right?

Well, in my case, this "accident" helped me to get married name driver's license. Without USCIS doc, my legal name is still maiden name (our marriage cert. shows maiden name only), but an employee at DL office KINDLY change record to new name when she saw SSC..... :hehe: that's what I didn't expect. I got perfect ID before GC.

And sorry I have no idea about your name on AOS forms....
