Working mom tops bar

By Bernadette Parco

Cebu Daily News

Intense self-study helped 28-year-old Jennie Cabading-Aclan hurdle the 2007 Bar Exams, where she landed in the top ten.

The Cebuana graduate of the University of San Carlos (USC) ranked fourth place among 1,289 passers in the national exams, with a grade of 82.10 percent.

She said she plans to devote her services defending “people who cannot afford to have a lawyer.”

“My strength is self-study,” said the working mother, who also credits her concentration on the support of her husband Angelito Jr. and their three-year-old son.

Cebu delivered two bar topnotchers in the 2007 Bar Exams.

Christian B. Llido of the University of Cebu (UC) was in tenth place, a tie with Vivian Tan of the University of the Philippines- Diliman with a score of 80.9 percent.

He will receive a brand new Toyota car as his reward from the school.

A cum laude political science graduate from the University of the Philippines, Llido would be the second UC law topnotcher to be given a car for making it to the top ten.

“Maybe I could choose a Vios sedan, but I don't know how to drive,” he said.

UC president Augusto W. Go said he would give a Toyota car to Llido, a tradition Go started last year when UC law graduate Al-Shwaid Ismael ranked eighth place in the 2006 bar examinations.

Both bar topnotchers told Cebu Daily News their self-imposed strict study habits helped them hurdle the difficult tests.

For Aclan, who works as a paralegal in the law office of Romulo Senining, the intense preparation started last year.

“I began my review after Holy Week last year. I did a self-review. My strength is self-study. I began with reviewing recent cases from the Supreme Court so that you can hone your legal analysis per subject,” Aclan said.

She spent two months reviewing texts of laws while outlining main topics and sub topics of the different subjects.

“During the bar, on Sundays, I just enjoyed the exams,” she said.

Aclan took up architecture at the Cebu Institute of Technology as her undergraduate course but her interest in becoming a lawyer began as a young girl.

“It's been my passion since I was in Grade Two, even though I didn't know then what lawyering was about,” she said.

“I really like the analysis part, how you marshal the facts, the way you reason things out,” she added.

After taking her oath, Aclan said she wants to become a full time public lawyer.

“I want to help persons who cannot afford to hire a lawyer, people who need a voice,” she said.

Meanwhile, Llido has chosen corporate law as his career focus and plans to stay with the Sycip law office in Cebu.

His first stop after being told he had passed the bar yesterday was to hear Mass at the Blessed Pedro Calungsod Shrine in the Archbishop’s compound.

“Para magpasalamat,” he said. Earlier that day he heard Mass s at the Carmelite Monastery in Mabolo because he knew the bar results would be out.

He said he was surprised that he made it to the top ten. He said he doubted he would pass because of his poor handwriting.

While preparing for the Bar, Llido said he would forgo sleep just to finish the review schedule he had set for himself.

He said he had some difficulty with the subject of political law and had only hoped to pass the bar.

“I took up law because it was my father asked of me. But I eventually enjoyed it,” said Llido who hails from Misamis Oriental.

His father, 54-year-old Crisogono Llido Jr., had wanted to take up law and took up Criminology instead and is presently working as a post master in Misamis Oriental.

PASSING

USC law school dean Alex Monteclar said he was proud of the performance of the graduates. A laptop computer will be given as a reward to Aclan for placing in the top ten. A similar prize was given to USC graduate Karen Gaviola who landed in seventh place in the 2006 Bar.

There were 71 USC law graduates who took 2007 Bar last year. Of this number, 39 passed or 55 percent, said law professor Judge Gabriel Ingles. There were 11 repeaters but only two passed.

That is great! I remember being in Bagio where they had a billboard that showed a bar exam topnotcher from 1996 that came from Bagio. It was still there with his picture a decade later.

It is a very big deal.

Congrats!

Joshua looks so cute too!!!

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Wow. What an accomplishment. Especially given that she is also a wife and mother, which surely must have been exhausting. Good for her.

She is incredibly bright - originally an architect major but then went to law school for 4 more years.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt
