Muslims more numerous than Catholics - Vatican

Posted: Monday, March 31, 2008, 7:31 (BST)

Islam has overtaken Roman Catholicism as the biggest single religious denomination in the world, the Vatican said on Sunday.

Monsignor Vittorio Formenti, who compiled the Vatican's newly-released 2008 yearbook of statistics, said Muslims made up 19.2 per cent of the world's population and Catholics 17.4 per cent.

"For the first time in history we are no longer at the top: the Muslims have overtaken us," Formenti told Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano in an interview, saying the data referred to 2006.

He said that if all Christian groups were considered, including Orthodox churches, Anglicans and Protestants, then Christians made up 33 per cent of the world's population - or about 2 billion people.

The Vatican recently put the number of Catholics in the world at 1.13 billion people. It did not provide a figure for Muslims, generally estimated at around 1.3 billion.

Formenti said that while the number of Catholics as a proportion of the world's population was fairly stable, the percentage of Muslims was growing because of higher birth rates.

He said the data on Muslim populations had been compiled by individual countries and then released by the United Nations, adding the Vatican could only vouch for its own statistics.

Who really cares anyway? We are all human and breath the same air.....

Right, but even then, I'm not sure you can consider Islam a single demonination. Muslims are about as diverse as Christians in thier views of religion.

You got that right brother. Islamic practices and beliefs in Indonesia are one example of diversity in comparison to the religious beliefs in other parts of the world. One cannot make a comparative analysis of people on religion alone, as origin can make a significant difference in tolerance of other cultures and religions.

My original statement does hold value, in that despite religious beliefs, family and sustenance are common key values to the survival of humanity.

The typical Indonesian Muslim is tolerant of most foreign religions and values, with certain restrictions.

Same with the Malays with the exception of a small band on the Thai southern border.

No body is keeping track of religious counts and I don't think virtual wife (member) is part of the problem. Its just a off topic discussion and she wanted to educate people on the forum or update every one. There is no competetion between any body. If you don''t have any thing positive to say please don't say any thing. Even though I am not religous but I have respect for all.

Let me tell you this world is going to end because of oil and religion which is very sad. I wish and hope that every one can stay in peace & harmony.

When I first saw the news on Yahoo, there was a quote about somebody saying

"It is true that while Muslim families, as is well known, continue to make a lot of children, Christian ones on the contrary tend to have fewer and fewer," the monsignor said.

I am not really sure about that. I mean, in Indonesia, I think everybody continue to make children. Muslims or not.

World domination, of course. The Christians and the Muslims are in a race for World Domination. Both think that their religion is the ONLY way and everyone else should either convert or die.

F##k religion.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.
