My two daughters have their birthdays 4 days apart from each other and both want a skateboard. Thing is...the ones they want are well over $100. I'll admit I know NOTHING about skateboards but can someone in the know tell me what is so different between the expensive ones and the ones you can get at like Target for $20?

better wheels, better trucks (the part between the wheels and the board), and an overall better board. you can buy them the $20 target one if you'd like, but as a former skateboard rider i'm sure you'll spend that remaining $80 each on bandaids and hydrogen peroxide :P

i dont remember their ages, but ask yourself, do they still go out and (play) to entertain themselves with friends or is this just a passing fancy? There maybe a bicycle/skateboard shop in your area can advise because you will want the added safety gear im sure, (and dont you try it out)

OK. This is like the Sesame Street game "which one of these doesn't belong?" Because I'm having a really hard time picturing Charles on a skateboard....blasting Black Flag....yelling "I'm Tony Hawk!" (Granted, my imagination added all the extra stuff....but still).

If you are up for an interesting experiement try this: Give them $100 dollars, tell them they can spend it on anything. I will bet you a dollar to a donut they don't buy an overpriced skateboard.

Personally, if they are over about age 8, they should be getting allowances and much smaller birthday presents. We tend to raise consumers instead of raising adults. Don't mean to rain on the party but, almost everything we do with our children are teacing moments. And I worry what I am teaching. :)

I (L) Black Flag....

Why?

They will be 11 and 12 (irish twins :) ) and last summer they spent the entire time on our street with a million other kids waiting their turn to try out other people's boards. I don't think the fad has gone away yet either since even though it's 40 degrees they were all out this weekend too.

Tony Hawk is older than a lot of people think. He was born in 1968. He is pushing 40.
