Canada birth cert. HELP!!

My fiance is from Ontario, our interview will be in Montreal.

What kind of birth certificate will they want? He's having problems getting a copy of his longform.

They won't issue him one because they have before. Why can't you get more than one certified copy? I'm obviously not understanding how it works in Canda to get copies of your birth certificate.

What exactly do you ask for when you call?

We need help urgently!! If they keep the birth certificate for immigration, we're going to need a copy for everything here (marriage license, ssn, driver's license etc...). I'm so confused.

3/5/11 sent LOC paperwork

3/9/11 date of NOA

?/?/?? biometrics appointment

He should be able to get another copy of it stating he needs it for Immigration to the US and he should get 2 copies just in case. Yes they keep the one you send in. I know the regulations are stricter in getting your BC in Ontario now but I think all he needs is a guarantor and he should be fine. Good luck.

If he has applied for one before, he should indicate that he needs to replace it. It will cost him more but I'm fairly certain he can get another certified copy.

I work for a municipality and I would suggest to you that you tell him to go to the municipal office where he lives and speak to a division registrar. They have direct lines to the Office of the Registrar General and should be able to get him an answer as to why he can't have another certified copy.

If that doesn't work, send me a message and I'll call to get you an answer.

He found out that by ordering a certified copy of the longform it will make the one he has obsolete.

I'm thinking we need 2 because they will keep one at Montreal and we need one for him here right?

He said that the US cannot keep his birth cert and if they do the Ontario govt will contact them to get it back.

I didn't know this was such a problem. ugh

In Alberta there are three birth certificates you can get:

1 - Wallet size, does not have the parent's names on it

2 - Frameable size - larger certificate and it does have the parent's names on it

3 - Long form - a photo copy of the actual original birth certificate - includes parents names and all details - parent's signatures etc

I am taking from what you have said that your Husband originally ordered item 3 and these are 'restricted' copies - I don't know why. This is probably why he is having a hassle.

I have read of many Canadians using item 2 for U.S. immigration and it seems to be just fine - and you should have no problem ordering another copy.

They should return the original birth certificate to you at the interview. You will want to take a photocopy of all documents you are submitting, makes it easier for them, they keep the copy, you get the original back.

Unsure how that would make it obsolete. He was born with the same details then as he is now.

Montreal doesn't keep any originals. (Except for the police report.) They copy the originals and hand them back.

I don't get the obsolete thing either but that's what they said to him.

So am I understanding this correctly...we can photocopy the longform and send it to Montreal and just take the original to show them? (i was told by the courthouse here that photocopying a certified document is illegal)

or

we submit the original longform and they will give it back to us at the interview? I have read on VJ here that they keep it.

I am sure they kept mine, which was what I thought might happen so I ordered 2 of them.

I can only speak to the IR1 visa interview my Husband had, where they did return his birth certificate to him at the interview. We originally submitted it to the National Visa Center with his other application documents.

I would say that the whole 'obsolete' thing and the thing about photocopying a certified document is - poppycock.
