what kind of rights they're seeking for? they do have equal rights as heterosexuals the differences its ILLEGAL for man to man to get married.

You are down right offensive. And while you are right, currently it is illegal for homosexuals to marry, that doesn't mean that the law is right. It was once illegal for women and black people to vote. Laws change. And they should. Its unfortunate that so many are so intolerant of someone who is different from them. So much so that you unnecessarily quetion another's sexuality for being tolerant. I find bigotry like that which you have expressed to be extremely offensice. I actually pity somone like you.

being a woman....and listening to other women defense homosexual lifestyle....it hurts...we should be the one fighting for the preservation fo the family as we grew up to know it.....but because in life its easier to take the popular position...afraid of being called names such as bigot and homopheobic.....well call all the names you want .../

I don't get how people read the bible as the "word of god" or something. It just doesn't make any sense. It never ceases to astound me that people take it literally. This is an instance where I have to tolerate others' beliefs but I know in my heart I'll never respect them.

Alex, in all fairness, if we are going to ask civil unions between same-sex couples to be respected, there needs to be respect for all religious beliefs too.

I don't think anyone should be legally "married" -- that should be a religious or cultural practice only. Straight and gay people should be able to enter into civil unions, and that's all the government should have to do with it.

I think there shouldn't be any distinction between 'marriage' and 'civil union'....in fact, I find it pedantic to split hairs over it. It's just a word. But in this day and age, gay marriages should be recognized even just for the legal aspect...next of kin, health ins reasons, household tax purposes, etc. It's not fair to have two people who love each other not be allowed to feel the same protection from society that the rest of us take for granted if they want to commit their lives to one another. Banning gay marriage isn't going to make 'the gays go away'...instead, imo, it perpetrates the stereotype of promiscuity amongst the gay comm. First we ban them from gettng married, then we bash em.

As far as the Bible, I consider myself a moderately religious/spiritual person, and it bothers me to see the lack of respect thrown around here. Personally, I don't know the Bible back and forwards, but I do attend mass almost weekly, and *my* God is a loving, accepting God. My faith teaches me to respect others, to always strive to do the right thing, and to do it all while knowing God loves me and every other person in this whole crazy azzed world. And yeah, I'm fallible just like everyone else, but that's ok too. My religion is about acceptance, forgiveness, and love. So why ppl feel the need to always pick out the bad as a way to tar the whole Christian religion as crazy and unforgiving is anyone's guess really. You might not agree with it, but please stop bashing it, cos clearly you don't have a full grasp on it.

People who use the Bible to push hate rhetoric and to justify evil ideas are the ones giving it a bad name IMO; in much the same way that islamic fundamentalist terrorism does to Islam.

I don't see the comparison. I respect everyone's right to hold their beliefs and their right to express them and live by them in whatever way they choose, within reason. I support equal rights for everyone regardless of beliefs and equal rights for all beliefs (within reason -- "gays should be lynched" should definitely not be honored).

I wish I hadn't said it, but since I did, I'll say that I don't feel I have to respect all beliefs per se. Not on their own merits. Instead, I'll respect someone's right to believe them. It doesn't make me respect the person who holds them less, I was surprised to find. I have several friends who are Christian and I was amazed to find that their beliefs didn't affect our friendship.

I don't mind it so much. I much prefer being on the tolerant side of the fence. And judging by the results of your poll, there are more of us so-called freaks of nature than judgemental people. Its really great cos we don't live in fear of those who are different from us!
