Why? The guy is into his 80's so its not like death isn't on the cards. If anything he's irrelevant now seeing as he's no longer in charge of the country, and especially given that he got away with everything he did. People should be concerned with how to move forward - not be hung up on an old man in a convalescent home.

Fidel Castro: dead or alive?

The question that arises from Fidel Castro’s meandering letter of resignation is, without wishing to be callous: “Is he already dead?” Was this the proverbial “letter to be opened in the event of my death”?

With characteristic self-effacement, Castro writes: “Preparing the people for my psychological and political absence was my primary obligation after so many years of struggle.”

Well, you can see his point. When you are father of the nation, your departure to the great collective in the sky is bound to come as a shock.

It seems to be an occupational hazard with communist dictators that they end up embracing the cult of personality with an enthusiasm that makes the average medieval monarch look self-effacing.

But the letter goes on: “I never ceased to say that we were dealing with a recuperation that was not free from risk". That’s a pretty strong clue, I’d have thought, that he may be in the departure lounge, if not yet embarked on his final flight.

But then what about: “My desire was always to carry out my duties until my final breath - that is what I have to offer”?

Reading too much into all of this? Quite possibly. That’s the trouble with ruthless and secretive dictatorships – they breed suspicion.
