Any smokers pass the sputum test?

My fiance is an active smoker, not a daily smoker, but still a smoker. I've gotten her to quit, but only a few days before her medical exam :(

Unfortunately, she had an abnormality with her chest x-ray and is currently undergoing the 3-day sputum test. I'm curious if anybody who was an active smoker at the time of their medical exams experienced any problems with their sputum tests?

I'm sure she will be ok because she exercises, eats healthy, and usually gets plenty of rest. She is also only 22 years old, 5 foot tall and 95 pounds and doesn't have any symptoms of active TB and neither does anybody in her household.

If anybody is willing to share their experiences as well as their timeframes for their results, it would be greatly appreciated! Also, if there is an 8-10 week delay, do I need to remake all of my documents (required Packet 4 forms as well as proof of continuous relationship during those 8-10 weeks) for her interview?

Thank you in advance,

Brett

being a smoker will not affect the result of her sputum test (which in actuality, tests one's sputum for AFB = acid fast bacilli = TB bacteria). It is good that you got her to quit which i'm sure will benefit her in the long run. Even if she looks healthy, eats healthy and exercises, TB is very common in third world country and according to recent data, there is a 60% chance of having the disease for every Filipino. I have not read anything about remaking documents in case of delays, except of course if she has to undergo treatment (which is 6 m0nths) then u have to supply her with your latest docs.

i hope this helped :)

**thanKs DOCJAZZIE* ill share what you said

hi i just like to ask:

i smoke cigarette maybe at least 5 sticks a day once a while. and im scared of the sputum test?

but recently i got a pre-employment last october and things are ok, however reading VJ makes me scared sometimes about there medical appointment. i wonder how does a nurse/doctor advise you to take that test?

where did you taken ur visa photos sent to NVC just wanted to make sure because i got an RFE from NVC about this? (how many photos/requirements, thats the only thing doctor, i lack to complete everything?

whats the best time to call just in case im lucky to find out case is completed? to know your medical and interview ( if the US-Manila embassy appointment link does not show yet your interview)

whats does SLEC do check during medical appointments?

what did you bring during your interview, following the CR1 visa?

any help is highly appreciated. thanks docjazzie

Hi! smile.gif First of all, the sputum test is not used to determine whether one is a smoker or not. And even if you smoke, it will not be a ground for visa delay or denial. The sputum test is required for those people who, after having their xrays, are found to be suspicious for, or have, TB infection. Now, the US is very particular about this disease because it is primarily a disease of third world countries and they don't want people with TB to enter the US because it is highly contagious. From what I read here in VJ, some of the girls are asked to undergo sputum test and depending on the result, get treatment or get their interview schedules. If you live with someone who have TB or have had TB infection before, you might be one of those who might have to undergo sputum test.

The photos i submitted are US Visa photos (2x2). You can go to any photo shops like Fuji, Kodak and Kameraworld and ask for a US visa photo. Almost all have it. Mine was 6 pieces for 100 Php. I submitted 2 to NVC, 4 at St. Luke's. Btw, we abandoned the CR1 route and went with the K3 because CR1 was taking sooo long to complete. We were waiting for it to complete since december and until now it's in process...but i'm here now in the US.

I found out about my schedule online cuz during my time, the website was updated. I dont know how they do it now. and when's the best time to call. But i got to talk to Grace when i was ff up my visa usually around 3pm.

The SLEc people are basically looking for people with infectious diseases like TB, HIV and drug users. The doctor will have you strip naked and check your body. My doctor did not touch any part of my body except to check for lumps on my breasts...but i heard about other doctors doing rectal exams or examining a patient more thoroughly.

I brought lots of paperworks during the interview and photos and proofs smile.gif

Dont worry too much, you'll be ok smile.gif

Goodluck! hope this helped smile.gif

Hi!!! If you were done with your X-ray and suspicious thing was found, they will let you undergo the 3 days sputum test..then after that it will be evaluated and either you are negative or possitive in the test they will let you wait for 8 weeks for the culture test. I had a lot of previous x-rays and had a recent one too before i went for my medical exam last April 14th but forgot to bring it during my medical. They will accept your xray if you bring them with you for they will ask if you had previous xrays. but as they say it is just for comparison, still the one that they made in St. Lukes is the one to be followed for evaluation. Just curious, did you undergo for the sputum test?

Myy mom is 68 yrs old and her 1st med. Exam has expired. Though she already completed her documents before the embassy requires her a repeat medical exam. Now she had to undergo the same process but this time she had to go to EENT and 3 days sputum! Before there were no problems, now after 6months she had to do it again. I hope it will turnout good despite of these delays so she ca have her visa! - TY!
