Why would anyone be stupid enough to try and fake something that can be checked with a simple phone call? 'Hello, did you write an employment letter for Fred Nerk?' 'No sir'... 'Does your business employ Fred Nerk' 'Nope, never heard of him' (or, he was let go last week...)

S.T.U.P.I.D.

There are some businesses that ask you to write your own employment letter - that's not cheating... but it still has to be signed by the person in authority.

OK, now how about this?...

I've been "unemployed" for a year as I have been caring for my grandmother, who has Alzheimer's. However, as of January I am being paid. But I do not get an official paycheck from her estate. Sometimes I get a check and other times I get cash.

So what to do? I'd like to be able to show the income, as yearly it would be over the 125% poverty level. I also have a co-sponsor, my parents, who are in charge of my grandmother's estate.

I'm really not sure how to handle this. :(

I would think that would be dependent on your paper trail. Do you pay taxes on the money you receive? Do you have the check stubs from each payment? I would imagine that whoever is in charge of your grandmother's eastate has to keep a written record of where the money goes. If you've got a paper trail then you may be able to prove your ability to support your fiance without a co-sponsor.

I don't think there is much of a paper trail. There are records showing what I have been paid each weekand they could be photocopied, of course. I have not paid any taxes on my pay, but I have been putting away a % so that at tax time I can file properly and have the $ to pay.

Matt,

Handle it the same way the self-employed do - by being honest on your tax return.

Hi Matt,

Your grandmother's estate can give you a 1099 at the end of the year.

I used to contract for 7 to 8 offices per year...now I am only with one.

I am an indy contractor and get paid this way...all is accounted for, and it's all completely legal.

Insist on checks, all the time, every time.

Get a co-sponsor.

Take an additional job.

I don't recommend doing this at all but as I was reading about the information you need to bring to the embassy for an interview, if somone had a fake employment letter, how would the embassy know? With technology today, it could be very easy to photoshop an employment letter with a fake signature. Are they going to call the employer and verify it? It seems like an easy loop hole in the system.

Anything can be falsificate easily in nowadays. But I would suggest to read policy before.

Get a letter from the executor of her estate, or whomever has power of attorney to pay you with your grandmother's funds. Back this up with bank records.
