Hey y'all,

Well here's the situation, I just got my EAD card so now I can go back to the SS office and get my SSN for me and my son. We'll be able to get onto my husbands insurance soon. The problem I'm having right now is I think I might be pregnant. I'm going to wait another week, then go get a home test to be sure. At this time I'm already late by 3 weeks, so I'm pretty sure I already know. My mother in law said as far as she knows, all insurance companies require you to have paid into insurance for 10 months before you can use it. I'm hoping this isn't the case, but that is why I'm here asking.

If I can't use my husbands insurance, is there any other method of getting help during the pregnancy, like Medicaid? I have to see a doctor if I'am pregnant. There is no way of going through it all without seeing one. We didn't plan all of this to happen, it just happened. I don't want to terminate the pregnancy, if I'am pregnant just because we have no insurance. I don't believe in doing that for that reason.

If anyone knows anything about Kaiser Permanente's Insurance or another way of getting help with this and could help me, I'd really appreciate it.

Mary

I'm not sure about your insurance company specifically, but with my husbands (he is on United), pregnancy is the one "condition" (that is there term, not mine) that they will cover regardless of when you signed up for insurance if it is through a spouse. I think very few respectable insurance companies would consider pregnancy a pre-existing condition that they would not help pay for. Your best bet is to call them and ask, that way you can be sure!

Ur best bet is to contact them directly!! There are various plans within each health providers framework, so it may be covered on someone else's plan, but not the one ur husband has (and vice versa)

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Is this employer-offered insurance? If so, you don't need a SSN to get added onto spouse's policy. I am already covering my husband who is still in Canada (although he has no use for it) because I didn't want to hit any freeze outs by the time he got here. If it is a private policy, I have no answer for you.

He might just use it for the dental coverage and get a cleaning on his next visit to see me. ("Come to the U.S. honey, you are over due for your dental check up," sounds a bit amusing.)

I think it depends on the insurance company, but Kaiser is a really big one I believe so I'm sure they would cover you. If not, there are ways of getting prenatal care without insurance. Planned Parenthood comes to mind. In order to use Medicaid you'd have to qualify (i'm not sure what the income requirements are).

Good luck to you! I hope the insurance works out...that would be your best option.

And CONGRATULATIONS!!

I have Kaiser, and have added my canadian spouse to kaiser.

I can tell you, i really hate Kaiser, their HMO policies are really subpar. Especially their Pharmacy.

Congradulations if you are preggo! sorry dont have info on coverage of pregnancy, but i was able to cover my wife without a SSN.

During one of my clinicals at the hospital, Insurance came up, and of course they asked how it worked in Canada, but a few of the Nurses agreed to stay away from Kaiser, not sure why. I'm sure all Insurance companies have their good/bad!!

Still its best to contact them directly and find out the answer and see what YOUR policy covers

Thanks again everyone. I'm going to get my husband to call them on his next day off. I don't like Kaiser either, but that is what his employer has, so I'll just have to deal with it.

I have Kaiser and it is good and bad sometimes. I find the dental to be worse than the medical with the long waits for regular check-ups. But they have many levels of coverage depending on which plan is provided by your employer.

It definitely is cheaper then regular insurance, which is why I have it. So I choose it over the other two companies that my employer offers me. But being a man, I use it about twice a year, so it is not a big deal. Plus I have never been pregnant.

Great to hear your news, Congrats!

My beloved Joy is here, married and pregnant!

Baby due March 28, 2009
