Google has turned off the lights

Anyways, I did hear once about Google making it black... energy saving thingie or something... funny tho when you realize more and more people use TFT and LCD for a monitor and that actually still needs power to produce a black pixel...

That's really dumb.

If they are serious about saving energy, why don't they use their billions to replace fossil fuels

with green power. Even one solar-wind power plant will make more of a difference than all the

white pixels in the world.

In a sign of support for the conservation effort "Earth Hour," Google has turned its Google.com page black on Saturday, March 29th. As their statement explains:

Google users in the United States will notice today that we "turned the lights out" on the Google.com homepage as a gesture to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour. As to why we don't do this permanently - it saves no energy; modern displays use the same amount of power regardless of what they display. However, you can do something to reduce the energy consumption of your home PC by joining the Climate Savers Computing Initiative.

On Saturday, March 29, 2008, Earth Hour invites people around the world to turn off their lights for one hour - from 8:00pm to 9:00pm in their local time zone. On this day, cities around the world, including Copenhagen, Chicago, Melbourne, Dubai, and Tel Aviv, will hold events to acknowledge their commitment to energy conservation.

yes, we did and since we are in Chicago which was the lead city for the US, it was cool to watch the lights in the skycrapers go out at 8:00pm. It's estimated that energy usage went down by 5% in the city during that hour. That is a huge amount.
