Thanks for replying everyone, it is really interesting to see what people are doing, if they like it, etc. :) I hope more people keep posting, you never know if this could turn into a good networking thread for jobs too - particularly for those in Graphic Design! I would love to be a 'Professional Volunteer' for awhile, but I think those days of life are gone in the US... :(

I love the idea of event planning, it requires all the crazy little things that I love - details, details, details! If I didn't have the eye for it before this process, I certainly do after this visa process!

For volunteer possibilities, check http://www.usafreedomcorps.gov/

on the top right, search by zip code and you will have all possibilities in your area.

The only thing is that i don't know if we have the right to volunteer (no AOS, EAD etc at the start) when we are basically waiting for the administration to process our file.

Thanks Melusine, I am actually already signed up with them from the last year that I lived in the US. (I am the USC) ;) I don't know why anyone couldn't volunteer, some things may require background checks, but they are not paid positions so no worries with EAD, etc.

In fact volunteering is a great way to make contacts, learn a little something about how things work in the US, and also pass the time until you are elegible for paid work. It was something I did many moons ago when right out of uni., and it helped me land my first job as a professional Girl Scout!

Did the Canadian Armed forces thing for nearly 15 years! Loved the Air force, lol

Now a RN student!! Dont care much for studying, lol but love being in the hospital, always something to do!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Hahaha ! I wonder if i should copy paste some of the answers here lol !

Used to be graphic designer pre-press/website for the last 7 years. But i went back to school last year to get a formation in 3d animation and visual effects wich is the original field i wanted to work with (but i was too early, school in this field in france 15 years ago just didn't exist).

For now i'm just out from school and i am still looking for a job/internship in my newly and shiny new field.

1) I work for a homeless shelter. Train homeless men to staff houses for people with mental illness.

2) It's varied, which I like. I get to go around the city, between the houses, checking on stuff and interacting with both my staff and the residents. I get to case manage my staff, helping them with their issues. I get to run classes. I like seeing people move on from homelessness with maybe substance misuse problems to getting their own place with a job. My office is away from the shelter so I have more flexibility. I like the people I work with. It's laidback. I would like more money, of course, tho.

3) I've never worked for a 'for profit' organisation, so it's difficult to compare, but I would recommend this type of job & this organisation specifically. They have been particularly good for me, offering me a job as soon as I stepped off the boat, so to speak. My brother is an accountant for a large company in the UK. I can't imagine pushing paper and making money for The Man, without any satisfaction that something I did at work may have made a significant difference to someone's life. But each to their own, I suppose. I'm sure he couldn't survive on my salary.

4) The shelter is hiring, tho my program is not. I was running this program on my own from Aug last year until a few weeks ago.

1) What kind of work do you do?

I'm an Bilingual IVR Specialist (Interactive voice response) for a TV satellite company but I was in Telecommunications for almost 10 years.

2) What do you love and hate about your particular profession and organization?

I'm learning new things everyday and get to work with very good people. I have a great boss and this company is probably the best company I've ever worked for.

3) Would you recommend your profession and/or organization to others?

Sure. It's not a thing you grow up thinking you'll end up doing but if it falls in your lap, it's pretty rewarding.

4) Are you hiring?

Nope. This is such a great company to work for that most people who land a job here glue themselves to their desks and rarely leave or get fired.

1) What kind of work do you do?

I work for a religious non-profit organization doing interfaith work. I administrate international citizen exchange programs, and work with other national religious non-profits on events and other projects.

2) What do you love and hate about your particular profession and organization?

I love that it feels like we can make a difference to promote understanding, even on a person to person level. I have seen so many people come full circle and that is really rewarding. I hate the long hours and low pay. I also hate the commute to the office in Washington DC.

3) Would you recommend your profession and/or organization to others?

Yes I think it's a great way to get into the field and explore a lot of other opportunities.

4) Are you hiring?

nope not us. Hard to get into non-profits but once you're in lots of room to move around!

Social services........can be depressing at times, at others fulfilling.

Right now I'm staying home with my daughter for a few more months....VERY fulfilling....love it :)

In the midst of the craziness of getting the visa for Ritesh and finding him a good job in IT, I am starting to think about my own job options when we go back - especially in the current market... I have been working in corporate training and teaching (sales/marketing, inter-cultural, and language) most of my life, and I love designing curriculum, actually teaching and working with participants - but am not a huge fan of corporate politics... Luckily, Ritesh will probably not have too many problems finding a good job fairly quickly and we have some money saved, so I am going to take a few months to settle in and look around - 'see what's on the menu' so to speak.

A couple of questions for the forum:

1) What kind of work do you do?

2) What do you love and hate about your particular profession and organization?

3) Would you recommend your profession and/or organization to others?

4) Are you hiring? ;)

Please feel free to add other details!

I handle the administrative aspect of one of our agency's branches. The workplace is just near home so it saves me money on transportation. What I do not like is politics meddling with personneling.

I wouldn't recommend it to people who does not like politics. Hiring? Well . . .Depends if you have a backer

1) What kind of work do you do?

I worked as a registered nurse while i'm still in the Philippines. In order for me to work as an RN here i need to take the state licensure test, which i haven't done yet. So for the meantime i applied as a CNA in one of the nursing home in our area as soon as i got my work permit. I was lucky to got hired and started working 2 days ago. I am not happy with the pay but it's the experience that counts after all.

2) What do you love and hate about your particular profession and organization?

Caring people from all walks of life is not an easy task. In my opinion, nursing career is a vocation rather than a profession. It takes a lot of effort and patience to deal with people physically, spriritually and emotionally in order to deliver a tender loving care. I am compassionate in nature, love kids so i guess that's the best reason why i am into nursing career. Not to mention earning ample amount of money. ;)

What i hate most is when people tend not to appreciate what you had done to them. But that is exactly part of it, you cannot please everybody.

3) Would you recommend your profession and/or organization to others?

Yes, i would recommend my profession to everyone who have a lot of patience and compassion.

4) Are you hiring? ;)

Nursing jobs is always on the run. Nursing facilities always need help.

GOD BLESS!
