In the midst of the craziness of getting the visa for Ritesh and finding him a good job in IT, I am starting to think about my own job options when we go back - especially in the current market... I have been working in corporate training and teaching (sales/marketing, inter-cultural, and language) most of my life, and I love designing curriculum, actually teaching and working with participants - but am not a huge fan of corporate politics... Luckily, Ritesh will probably not have too many problems finding a good job fairly quickly and we have some money saved, so I am going to take a few months to settle in and look around - 'see what's on the menu' so to speak.

A couple of questions for the forum:

1) What kind of work do you do?

2) What do you love and hate about your particular profession and organization?

3) Would you recommend your profession and/or organization to others?

4) Are you hiring? ;)

Please feel free to add other details!

1. I am a formulation scientist involved in personal care and household products development and patenting. I am new in this field, I used to work in analytical lab, sales and technical dept., and some minor healthcare back home.

2. I love the challenges, everyday there is something new to learn and discover. It is nice to be able to have that freedom to conceptualize a good material and then formulate and create a product (like lotions personal care, and laundry detergents for household research) from scratch. The organization provides support for technical skills & development. The company itself promotes "green products".

I cannot say I hate but what gets me sometimes is the politics there. It's everywhere so I just try to keep myself off of it.

3. Yes, very much. The pay is very rewarding (entry level is $45k-70k depending on previous work exp). The work environment can be challenging at first especially for immigrants like me, but once you adapt, it will be smooth-sailing. The benefits are great. You meet a lot of new people from all over the world (suppliers). You have the chance to travel for conventions, stay in very nice hotels expenses paid by the company of course. Majority of the people in the research facility are nice. In the corporate headquarters, no comment. We had applicants from other states like Ohio, Utah who were all interviewed by teleconference, and personal interviews done here in CA. All expenses like travel fares, hotels, food, paid for by the company.

4. I have to check the internal jobs available. ;) I haven't checked lately.

1. IT - infrastructure support, not development

2. I love the challenge. I hate certain aspects of the organization, most people have been around a very long time they're less open to 'new' ideas than they oughta be.

3. Yes. It's a very supportive organization and they pay well.

4. Yes.

1) Environmental Engineer for a mining company

2) I love most of it. Every day it's something new. With the mining industry booming though, we can't hire enough people in the environmental field, so we are stretched thin.

3) Definitely. It's pretty stable. With countries like China and India needing huge amounts of metals for their growth, mining will be important for decades.

4) Yes

What's there to hate?

1) What kind of work do you do?

I am the assistant to the management/ event marketer/ project manager for an international investment bank

Mainly I organise (well, used to before they froze all projects due to the banking crisis) fancy client events, closing dinners, participation of the bank at trade fairs within Europe, all kinds of business off sites. Besides that, I seem to be the spiritual guidance for my boss and his right hand. :P

2) What do you love and hate about your particular profession and organization?

Don't hate anything about my profession, it's my passion, I love it and would not like to do anything else.

The company itself could be more decisive. Decisions are being dragged out for - as it seems - forever. I wish they would hire more professional people (speaking for the German branch), not people who have no idea about what they are doing (especially back office).

3) Would you recommend your profession and/or organization to others?

My profession - yes, definitely. The bank - in general I would not recommend working for an investment bank.

4) Are you hiring?

Nope, banking crisis ;)

Trained dental technician (never did it past my highschool years), teacher of English as a Foreign Language (only did that for 6 months), program coordinator (higher education exchange program) and finally personal/executive assistant. Loved working with college students but that will have to wait.

The new job (which I start in April) is admin support to managers/directors at a big firm - they have offices all over the States.

As far as I know, there are currently 200+ jobs opening posted on the website.

Forgot to mention - great benefits.
