What field of work are you in?

In the midst of the craziness of getting the visa for Ritesh and finding him a good job in IT, I am starting to think about my own job options when we go back - especially in the current market... I have been working in corporate training and teaching (sales/marketing, inter-cultural, and language) most of my life, and I love designing curriculum, actually teaching and working with participants - but am not a huge fan of corporate politics... Luckily, Ritesh will probably not have too many problems finding a good job fairly quickly and we have some money saved, so I am going to take a few months to settle in and look around - 'see what's on the menu' so to speak.

A couple of questions for the forum:

1) What kind of work do you do?

2) What do you love and hate about your particular profession and organization?

3) Would you recommend your profession and/or organization to others?

4) Are you hiring? ;)

Please feel free to add other details!

1) What kind of work do you do?

I am currently working as SEO Analyst and PHP developer. I have many webdevelopment years behind me and also some experience as a project manager.

2) What do you love and hate about your particular profession and organization?

Well, the current organization I do not like much, they work completely different than I would work as some things are against my morals. As for the profession, yeah, coding stuff and working in the IT has always been one of the things I loved to do although I am not sure about the SEO part.. Search engines are hard to keep up with lol.

3) Would you recommend your profession and/or organization to others?

Unsure.. my organization, then nope. The profession, well, if you have the brains for it and like to code.. why not.. it is something you can actually do all over the world as long as you have internet access (and that is actually not even needed either).

4) Are you hiring? ;)

Well, my company is always hiring but I doubt a job in the Netherlands is something your SO is looking for lol, plus I wouldn't recommend it either to work at my company lol.

Please feel free to add other details!

I will set up a webdevelopment company (well that with some other branches in the IT and marketing) together with a friend in the states for when I move there and live with my beloved one (well, basically the company has been set up, it is just waiting for me to come over lol) but we won't be hiring for a while I think as we need to have this set off nicely (Then again, if your SO has great graphic skills then he might be able to work with us on a freelance base as we will go look for a few ppl later on haha).

Thanks for your response! Actually, I think Ritesh is pretty set, but we are always open to new ideas. It is actually me, the USC who is worried about jobs! ;)

I'll play.

I have worked as a freelance & contract graphic designer for a looooooong time.

Running one's own business teaches you about wearing all hats.

Having done my own taxes in Canada and understanding entrepreneur/business write-offs, etc. was great...now to learn it here in the U.S.

Ha!

As for other things I do: film-making (film and video, plus audio & video editing), and I have taught karate and formal stretching classes. I may do that again, too.

I also deliver (and race) sailboats. Anyone hiring?? :innocent:

I'd like to get into the film community here.

Yessss.

Love/hate? It's feast or famine. Love, mostly.

Recommend? Absolutely. You will not find me workin' for da man. (Unless he/she is super conscious.)

Check out LinkedIn...it's a great on-line networking thingie.

1) What kind of work do you do?

Graphic design, though in my job I tend to be the one writing copy for ads, websites, etc.

2) What do you love and hate about your particular profession and organization?

I love that I work in a casual setting, in a small office with only a handful of others. I don't hate anything about my job or company, but the hours are long.

3) Would you recommend your profession and/or organization to others?

I would absolutely recommend both to others; at the moment I'm trying to push my husband to get his design boards together because we're expanding again!

4) Are you hiring? ;)

Yes, and if you happen to be a graphic designer with more than five years of experience AND are in the NY Metro area, e-mail me!

ETA: Holy hell we have a lot of graphic design folk here!

1. I'm a teacher. Currently I teach at an international school in China. I'm also looking for work. My problem is that I want a job lined up before I go home, but the hiring season is over back home before the school year here ends. I'm trying to line up phone interviews, commonly done in international school teaching, but not so common back home.

2. Too much to go into for both ends of the spectrum, but I'm sure you would have heard it all before. You are in a related field, but kids are a whole different kettle of fish.

3. Yes and no. See above.

4. There is a teacher shortage. I'm sure you would be snapped up as an ESL teacher if you were interested.

1. training and first career: Museum curator - such jobs are few and far between for us:-) - we are highly specialized and most communities don't need many - often only 1 or 2. Currently working part time in the heritage field as a step on tour guide in period costume; Yes, I would recommend the work, but it is a field in which you work for the pleasure of the job rather than the money, and the job selections are extremely limited unless you are free to re-locate. I'm not, now.

2. Second career - Constituency Assistant to the Member of Parliament for our riding. This job is non-existent here! Could work for a Federal Representative or Senator as similar skills required, but US citizenship and familiarity with US programmes a necessity. Absolutely loved the work! Applied at the Canadian Consulate since knowledge and job skills relevant, but no jobs available.

Are they hiring? Not around where I live. Lots of volunteer opportunities, though.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Someone should take a poll of how many graphic designers there are.

Ha!

I have worked mostly in print, including pre-press and print production.

I have been in this industry from the days of film and plates! (And I have made both.)

Is print (paper) dead?

Nope!

I've done plates too, altho not much.

If you ask any of my NYC print designer friends, they will say yes - it's dead. ;) It's part of the reason I switched industries too.
