No Need to Lock Your Doors?

The results of CQ Press's annual Crime State Rankings are in. Join us as we reveal which 15 states were ranked as the safest for 2008.

And get ready for a surprise! After being in the top spot 9 of the past 10 years, North Dakota has been knocked from its throne. Click through our gallery to see who took its "safety" crown.

  • No 1: New Hampshire

New Hampshire is ranked No. 1 for the first time thanks to impressively low crime across the board. It boasts the nation's lowest murder rate and second-lowest aggravated assault and burglary rates.

Rankings in Crime (out of 50 states)

    (1 = Worst, 50 = Best)

    Assault: 49

    Burglary: 49

    Murder: 50

    Motor Vehicle Theft: 47

    Rape: 39

    Robbery: 43

  • No. 2: Maine

The Pine Tree state has been ranked in the top three each of the past 15 years. It has the lowest assault rate in the U.S.

    Assault: 50

Rankings in Crime (out of 50)

    Assault: 44

    Murder: 32

    Motor Vehicle Theft: 28

I can only speak for RI.It may be safer than other states, but we still have to lock our doors.Especially our car doors because people just love to steal car stereos here. Not only did some idiot steal my radio, but he/she stole a couple of stuffed animals I had in the car also. Many people from larger states are relocating here, that's why houses are so ridiculously expensive.

I grew up in the number 2 most dangerous state in the US, Louisiana, and we NEVER locked our doors. My parents didn't even know where the key to the front door was, and I'm not sure we had a key to the back doors or the doors to the balconies upstairs. I didn't know anyone in our neighborhood who locked their doors.

We didn't lock our car doors either.

My parents moved and now they lock their doors. When I was home last year, I kept forgetting to lock the back door, though.

I grew up in Northern WI and we never locked our homes or cars (left the keys in the ignition even). I live in northern VA now, and there is no chance I would ever leave anything unlocked here, not even to run down and but laundry in the washing machines. Maybe other parts of VA are different though??

We are in a fairly safe neighbourhood. We lock the doors when we are away but not when we are at home. My husband did forget to lock the house one long weekend when he was coming up to see me in Canada, though. Had no problems. He also used to forget and leave the garage door open and again had no problems. I did forget to lock the car one night and found someone had rifled through the glove compartment overnight. Nothing was missing - nothing important was there - however the garage opener was in the car, and that worried me more - someone could have gained access to the house, so I make sure the car is always locked now when I am not using it.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
