I remember reading the newspapers here in Louisiana shorty before Hurricane Katrina hit- I was here as a tourist at the time. It estimated that the murder rate would hit 300 by the end of the year, at the time it was at about 250-260. I was flabbergasted.

At the time I was living in Edmonton Canada- which was considered "the murder capital of Canada" There were 44 murders in Edmonton that year.

I am always cautious when I go out- especially at night but I have never felt "unsafe" in either place. In both cities there are obvious areas that most people tend to avoid because those areas seems to be the brunt of the problem.

is all this state really dangerous state in america.?...i want to know your opinion.....

The statistics are probably pretty accurate. But the truth is that most murder is limited to particular areas that we simply avoid if we have the choice.

Take my state, Louisiana, number 2 on this list. When I was in high school, we had the first murder in my entire parish/county since the Civil War. The murderer was later one of the two real-life murderers fictionalized as a composite character in the movie, Dead Man Walking, but that's not the point. I don't think there has been another murder on that end of the parish since then, but I could be wrong about that.

Yeh here in South Carolina we beat our wives so the assault's pretty high

I think it's probably pretty accurate, unfortunately...I've never read any analyses as to why/what areas are bad in SC though so this is all just my own kind of synopsis.

SC doesn't really...have much at all as far are cities or semi-built-up towns go, really xD We've got Spartanburg-Greenville where I grew up, Columbia which most people aren't impressed with, and Charleston which gets lots of tourism and is very pretty but also has a pretty bad impoverished ghetto side.

Alllllll in between that going up and down the highway there are just tiny little towns you've never heard of that MIGHT if you're lucky have a gas station, really.

I know the crime rate in Charleston seems pretty high, whenever I read the local paper there's usually a lot more bad stuff going on here than there ever was in Spartanburg. My mom used to say when I was little that our education ranking wouldn't be nearly so low if there wasn't a huge discrepancy in public school qualities between the north half of the state and the southern half.

It does seem like once you pass Columbia here, you're kind of going into a geographical territory that could very easily be Texas Chain Saw Massacre. You're in the low country terrified by yourself NO real exits or anything for about 110 miles til you hit Charleston, only thing you see is deer :P I've heard some bad backwoods stories of messed up things happening in these little places, too, but numbers-wise still probably doesn't compare with cities.

I will say that I DO think there is actually a lot of um...old genetic problems in some of our usually more poorer people/areas probably from incest stretching back, and now with terrible education, seems to be more birth defects and mental illnesses and social disfunctions than there statistically should be. Factor into that extremely 'traditional' backwards sort of thinking like racism and sexism and chauvenism and almost radical religion, good things are not going to happen. Now I've never spent a lot of time in any other states so maybe ALL states have this section of their population that's just Messed Up, but it does seem we got a bunches...

Summer 2001 - met my Scottish boy

December 18th, 2007 - proposal in Madrid's Botanical Gardens with a duck standing behind him going 'food?'

January 18th, 2008 - I-129F sent to VSC

January 31st, 2008 - received NOA1, issued Jan. 24 :)

February 24th, 2008 - NOA2; omgwtfbbqlolz

February 29th, 2008 - NVC letter sent

Watch out for those "North Side Boys" :)

Edmonton I found most of the murders were either Asian gang related or someone killing prostitutes and homeless people. Sad.

I have no idea, I am just glad to see Hawaii is not on that list.. reading the advertiser lately did make me wonder about it lol

HAWAII......
Hawaii's quality of life reflects the advantages of the state's climate, health, recreation and cultural opportunities. Hawaii is consistently rated as one of the best states to live in when criteria include environmental factors, low crime incidence, quality of education, and longevity. Many know Hawaii as an attractive tourist destination with beautiful scenery, mild weather, friendly people and a host of cultural and recreational opportunities. These elements, and others, also make Hawaii an excellent place to live.

Climate

Hawaii's climate is very comfortable. The average temperature is 78 degrees Fahrenheit (26° C) in cooler months and rarely gets above 90 degrees (32° C) in the summer. Residents enjoy outdoor sports and activities all year long, with ocean sports popular even during winter. Hawaii's clothing costs are substantially below those of temperate locales. Prevailing trade winds and moderate rainfall cool the islands year-round.

Health

Hawaii residents enjoy the longest average life expectancy in the nation. The state ranks 50th in preventable deaths and those due to accidents, 49th in deaths by cancer and heart disease, 45th in per capita number of deaths due to strokes. Hawaii ranks tenth in the number of physicians and first in number of dentists per 100,000 population.

Hawaii has a progressive health care system, with state-of-the-art equipment in hospitals throughout the state, and innovative approaches to critical issues of universal health care access and substance abuse.

Environment

Honolulu has been ranked first among the nation's 75 largest metropolitan areas, based on six environment-related criteria in the 1995 survey by the World Resource Institute. Low humidity, cooling trade winds, and a lack of industrial pollution make Hawaii's air quality the best in the nation. Hawaii's water is clean and adequate for the state's domestic, business and agricultural needs. Water is filtered by the islands' porous lava rock in a 25-year rain-to-tap cycle. Hawaii is world-renowned for its scenic beauty. Over the years, hundreds of movies and commercials have been produced in the islands, taking advantage of Hawaii's scenic panoramas. Hawaii's pioneering statewide land management system reflects its concern and commitment to protection of the environment.

Education

Hawaii hosts major higher education and research efforts. Organizations such as the East-West Center, Japan-America Institute of Management Science, and the University of Hawaii's School for Travel Industry Management and Center for International Business Education and Research have acquired international reputations. Hawaii is at the forefront of national research in astronomy, ocean and earth sciences.

The State of Hawaii initiated the first statewide after-school program in the nation. The "A+ Program" allows working parents to concentrate on their jobs, secure in the knowledge that qualified personnel are adequately caring for their children.

State government administers Hawaii's elementary and secondary public school system. The state ensures equal funding for all, while eliminating school district government and the need for property taxes or municipal revenues to support education.

Culture

Cultural opportunities are rich and varied in Hawaii. The state's diverse heritage gives rise to many Asian and Pacific festivals along with Western celebrations. Hawaii has 73 museums, state monuments, zoos and similar attractions. Honolulu has twelve theatrical groups, the Hawaii Opera Theater, Honolulu Ballet and the Honolulu Symphony. The visitor industry has generated important entertainment opportunities, including Polynesian and Western groups at numerous dining establishments, shows and programs. Performances in Hawaii frequently feature outstanding touring artists and groups. In the past these have included the ballet companies of San Francisco and the Bolshoi, Broadway road productions, East Asian traditional dance ensembles and popular vocal artists. Hawaii also sees major rock and pop stars, who include Hawaii in their East Asian tours. Classical musicians perform with the Honolulu Symphony throughout its annual season.

Recreation

Hawaii's near-ideal year-round climate supports a variety of outdoor activities, particularly golf, tennis, and a wide range of ocean sports. There are 65 golf courses statewide. Hawaii has a well-developed public parks system including seven national parks, 77 state parks, 586 county parks and a number of botanical gardens. There are 282 public tennis courts, 2,100 small boat moorages, and over 1,600 recognized surfing sites. Windsurfing on Maui and Oahu takes advantage of some of the world's best surf and wind conditions. There are miles of safe, sandy and accessible beaches statewide. Almost three-quarters of a million people attend University of Hawaii collegiate sports events each year.

Low Crime Rate

In 2005, Honolulu was ranked the third safest city among the twenty largest U.S. cities.

The People

Hawaii's people possess the intangible "aloha" spirit. Hardworking and productive, they are also friendly and helpful. The blending of cultures in Hawaii is complemented by the presence of an international spectrum of visitors who add to the state's rich diversity, hospitality and promise.

Sorry but that makes me laugh. I've never seen so much racism in my life than when traveling to HI. I didn't know what a "haole" was until this year. I've been called a honky and haole seven times. I'm from Canada . . . we don't use those words . . . unless we're in the confines of our house.

As for being safe, it seems safe enough. Dog the Bounty Hunter had me thinking otherwise with all the "ice heads" everywhere. I think its just his crowd. . . .

::There’s a laugh in my eyes::

There’s a waltz in my walk

And it’s been such a long time

Since there was hope in my talk

If you never knew

What it is that’s new.. it’s you

‘Cause when your hands are in mine

You set a fire that everyone can see

And it’s burning away

Every bad memory

To tell you the truth

If it’s something new.. baby it’s you

It’s you in the morning

It’s you in the night

A beautiful angel came down

To light up my life

The world’s a different place

Where nothing’s too hard to say

And nothing’s too hard to do

Never too much to go through

To tell you the truth

Everything that’s new.. baby it’s you

It’s you in the morning

It’s you in the night

A beautiful angel came down

To light up my life

My life, my life

Ohh

So if I get to grow old (oh if I get to grow old)

With many years behind me (many years behind me)

There’s only one thing I want (aahh)

One thing I need beside me

For all that you are

For everything you do

For all that you’ve done

Just for showing me the truth

My mom's girlfriend's son lives in Harlem in NYC and he says he loves it and it's been cleaned up a lot :) I've never been to NY but that's really cool. I'd love to go.

Sorry but that makes me laugh. I've never seen so much racism in my life than when traveling to HI. I didn't know what a "haole" was until this year. I've been called a honky and haole seven times. I'm from Canada . . . we don't use those words . . . unless we're in the confines of our house.

Someone in one of my classes exchanged to Hawaii for a year and was talking about all of this :( Really sucked to find out...she said the school she was at, they actually had like an official "Kill Whitie" day. She didn't like the place at all.

I mean historically they kind of got screwed but I wouldn't think they have that bad of a deal now. I don't see where all that is coming from.

Maybe each of the little islands is a lot different, though?

lol.. speaking about haoles... you should check this forum out if you want see a shitload of racism: http://www.topix.net/forum/source/honolulu-advertiser there is plenty to go there :/

That forum actually made me seriously scared about moving there since, even tho my SO says I am different than a 'typical haole' coz I seem to act different, I am still a haole imho (btw, haole basically means a person who is not born there but is used mostly for white ppl).

Also, I have been on Hawaii three weeks in September, never had anybody calling me haole. If they will call me like that, I will just ignore it.... they probably want me to respond on it, guess that will be too bad for them if I don't lol. Oh well, her family and the people living near my SO already told her that they liked me better than her ex, who was kama'aina btw (Hawaii born resident).

I did, when I was there, experience a lot of Aloha spirit.. Maybe it is not enough for some people, some even say it is slowly dieing on Hawaii but I don't know. Compared to what I have experienced in my own country, people were much more helpful and nice to each other than you see over here.

As for the rest, I know Hawaii is a pretty safe city but seeing it has only 1.3 million people living there and the amount of crimes being listed in the Honolulu Advertiser, it did make me wonder about how safe it really was.

Oh well, there is so many pros and cons on every place on earth.. I think has quite a lot of pros anyways :D
