Founding Ideology

Democratic Party

Political science defines a "democrat" as a proponent of social equality and an advocate for the underprivileged. Known as the peaceful party, the Democrats in the States rally for personal freedoms, equal rights, civil liberties, equal opportunity and free enterprise.

Who wrote this? Because ALL parties founded in the early days of the US were founded on social equality. It was the Republican Party that backed abolitionism. NOT the Democratic Party. The platform of neither party has ever been based on limiting legal immigration. That includes today. Illegal immigration? Well, I don't think we are talking about that.

Also, the Republican Party ideology, in the last century, has traditionally been about smaller government, not about patriotism. I think the author of this piece was talking about the people who stereotypically gravitate toward one party or another. He/she certainly wasn't talking about the politics of either party.

Anyway, Liberalism and the Democratic Party are not necessarily synonymous.

What each party stands for has evolved through time. I would argue that the aims of smaller goverment are no longer part of the republican party. That ideal is now best embraced by the libertarian party.

I would agree with your entire statement. That was the point I was trying to make. The article cited some very loose definitions of both parties that did not resemble either, past or present. And I think I put my commas in the wrong place, but I certainly meant that until this last admin., the major focus of the Republican Party was a smaller federal government. Not so anymore.
