BTW- he didn't make the definitions up, it's what popularly considered (among conservatives - that is key) to be liberalism.

Well, can someone explain American Political Liberalism to me then? Quite honestly, I have no idea what it is meant to be other than a mish mash of ideas that seem to have no context and an object of hate by some people who seem to hate anyone who doesn't think like they do.

Its pretty funny to me to hear people bang on about liberalism and conservatism - because the whole range of US politics is (to me) noticeably further to the right than was in the UK. Even those folks referred to as "Far left" (which is used so often and so "liberally" that its pretty meaningless) might best be described as center-right from a european perspective. I'd say that if they think Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama are "far left", they don't know what "far left" is. Far right on the other hand... That's rather more noticeable. For a European.

Again, I don't understand what you mean by that Gary. It doesn't make sense. Political Liberalism is what it is, it isn't something that you can just call something just because it's convenient.

When I refer to a "liberal" in the political context I am not referring to the personal ideals of liberalism. In my personal life I am actually very liberal. As long as you are not hurting someone else then I say have fun. But in politics I am very conservative. In a lot of ways the labels of Liberal and Conservative are mixed up when politics are concerned. A lot of what conservatives want is in reality a liberal view and a lot of what liberals want is in reality a conservative view politically speaking.

When you see me (speaking only for myself here) say something about a liberal look at it in the political context of todays democrat party. The labels don't necessarily fit the reality but that is the word used to describe that group.

Just shows how stupid these labels are then doesn't it? Most people do have a mixed bag of views that can't be conveniently tied up with a conservative or liberal label. Perhaps this is an opportunity to stop the 'shut up, you're a liberal' ####### that goes on and stick to whatever topic is being discussed and each individual's take on it.

PH, agreed. Most people have what we'd consider liberal and conservative views on different topics. I don't think I know anyone who is down-the-line 100% on anything.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand - where in the liberal definition does it say that every liberal has to like every other liberal? What is wrong with the two democratic nominees pushing their particular strengths and contrasting those to their opposite number's weaknesses (As percieved by themselves of course)? I don't see why they have to be nicey nicey during the campaign at all. I also don't quite get why their differences are perceived to be so earth shatteringly terrible that they couldn't support each other politically once the race is over. Seems to me that most of the perceived 'hatred' is media manufactured and fuelled by interested parties and some on the ground supporters who have got a little too enthusiastic in support of their preferred candidate.
