Okay...since we are talking about worms here....I HAVE to share this funny story with you all....

On my first trip to Morocco, my husband's brother had taken us to Marrakech for a long weekend. On the way back, I had to go to the bathroom REALLY, REALLY bad. So he stopped in the middle of no where and finally found a rock I felt I could hide behind to do my business. (Had to go #1, btw) As I was pulling up my britches, I looked down and saw all of these worms RIGHT where I tinkled. I started screaming and freaking out and crying. I was so hysterical that I couldn't talk for a few mintues. When my husband finally calmed me down, I told him that I had worms from eating the meat in Morocco. He was like "WHAT!!!???!!!" When I told him what happened, he doubled over and laughed and laughed and laughed. He told me that those were just worms in the ground and that I was fine. Then he told his brother and they laughed almost the whole two and half hours back to his parents house. Then they told his parents and they laughed. They STILL bring it up EVERY TIME that I go over.

My husband hasn't stopped eating pork since he arrived. He wishes he could eat it at every meal.... it was one of his favorite foods in Egypt, but it was so hard to buy and find well-prepared. He loves polish sausages, ham & bacon!! Those are his favorites.... if it's unhealthy, then he's in trouble.....

Which again brings me to this-- why ar epoeple not all in a bunch over camels? Camels are forbidden although islam decided it was OK after all to eat camels and rabbits, two specifcally forbidden things. So? What's the deal with harping on pigs?

the marvin harris theory on why they were forbidden in the first place is that cattle, sheep, etc. all eat grass, but pigs aren't too keen on grazing. pigs provide more competition for pretty precious food sources like grain. they serve no other purpose than a meat source, while cattle, sheep, camels are all multi-functional-milk, transport and labor, clothing, etc. pigs make no sense in a desert environment. too labor intensive, and not a worthwhile enough payoff.

it's not a perfect theory, but it makes more sense than "eww pigs are wormy and germy".

My husband IS here... and I do not cook pork in the house (I never did before anyway...so I didn't stop because of him. I usually only eat pork at my dad's house or at a restaurant)

but I have ordered it at restaurants with my husband sitting there with me! We usually share things but when I specifically order pork I let him know he can't have a taste this time! He's never been offended...just wished I ordered beef or lamb instead so he could eat all the food!

Yeah, but pigs are they are native to Israel/north Jordan, etc. There are still wild pigs there today-- they get into the farms up there :) It's not a desert environment there, but rather far from it-- it's 16+ inches of rain/year (Jerusalem being very wet at 25+.). Also camels and rabbits don't fit that model (both are listed as cud-chewers but still forbidden). But yeah, I totally agree-- wormy and germy doesn't make sense at all since, to me, that describes any kind of meat... as Jen pointed out fish have worms.. and all animals are carriers of parasites (unless you drug them totally up-- which can be done today, but isn't practical over herds and obviously wouldn't retroactively apply to any reasoning of the past).

Haha! I typed pigs are monovores. That reminds me of earlier today when I read on wikipedia about groundhogs: ". Groundhogs are generally agonistic and territorial" which I read as "groundhogs are generally agnostic." I have a fever right now and am drugged up myself and thought, hmm, you couldn't even poll that-- how unscientific. Sometimes I amaze and disappoint myself.

I like the new picture on your signature. The hat! The hat is precious.

None of my posts have ever been helpful. Be forewarned.

In my high school science class, I remember our teach putting a piece of bacon under a microscope and pouring something on it and all these tiny little worms came out. I don't remember what he poured, it surely wasn't a soda, but it did actually make the worms come out. However I wouldnt be surprised if this happened with any dead animal.

Seriosly?!?!? omg, that makes it easier to give up one of my favorite meats lol

I don't think the theory makes much sense if one accepts the Qur'an as divine. An "all knowing" God would be able to foresee circumstances where raising pigs would not be as labor intensive, not be in deserts, be a good business, etc. and assumes God lacked knowledge of Iberico pigs and other grazing types of pigs (some now nearly extinct). If Harris' theory is the reason, God probably would have thrown in some type of abrogation for ecological economics, similar to how we are told we can eat pork of out of necessity/hunger if it is not done as an act of willful disobedience.

Harris goes on to say that Islam was limited in its ability to being the predominant religion once it reached populations where pork is a mainstay of the diet. I don't see God making a rule about Wilbur that would limit the spread of Islam.

It doesn't add up for me.

I've seen lots of worms in chickens when the district agent came to our farm and disected a chicken to check to see if they were infected. The company that we used to raise chickens for gave us medicines which we put into the chicken's drinking water to eliminate the worms. Hopefully the chemicals in the de-worming med was less harmful than the worms.

I've also seen some really large worms in fish we caught off the Florida east coast. I was really surprised to see how large these had gotten but the guy filleting the fish said it was normal and just sort of striped them out of the flesh.

In my opinion, a lot of the religious restrictions come from rules religious leaders created hundreds or thousands of years ago to protect their people's health due to poor cooking or preservation practices. People still use incense in religious ceremonies also. This probably originated to lessen the stench of the body odor of people who hadn't bathed in weeks or months. If people don't want to eat certain foods or scratch a particular part of their body, it really doesn't matter as long as they don't try to force others to do the same.

I've also seen lots of worms in fish. I've worked at restaurants where I was the fish butcher and looooooooong skinny white worms are imbedded in fish a lot of the time! When I found them, I would send them back...but can you imagine how many times chefs serve it anyway?

Yep, I prefer my parasites dead rather than alive.

Kick it up a notch - grab a handful of roaches and fry em up. Tastes better dead.

Rats too! Hey, they're meat, right?

Bleh.

If parasites were such a problem in other meats, then WHY do they need marking on pork of "parasite killing temperature"?

Bacteria on the other hand, that's on everything. You've got plenty under your fingernails - a decomposing piece of meat will have enough for everyone, no matter what kind of meat.

The smell of the neighbor cooking up that pig flesh makes me want to vomit. :\

---

As for the chef who tosses some roundworms on someone's seafood dish -lol- I'm sure.

Visible parasites in food? Uhh ... don't you think they'd be visible in the finished product? That's plain nonsense.

Hell! If they're fryin' em up at the seafood place - SERVE EM UP!

I'll pick that fish apart with a toothpick and have my lawyer's number on speed dial. XD

Sorry, I'll stick with "I ain't touchin' it." I'll go veggie before I eat pr0k. Besides, vegetarian tastes pretty good. ;)

( and that's vegetarian without slopped cheese ... bleh. Ever see one of those Linda McCartney dinners? Cheese slop. And you wonder why she died "young" and "healthy". Probably had 5lbs of cheese-fat clogged up in her aorta. )
